SuperGodX1's Egret Project
« on: November 23, 2004, 09:36:44 pm »
My Egret cabinet showed up today.  Appears to be in decent condition.  Just needs to be cleaned up a bit, and the monitor surround definitely needs to be repainted.  Its a tad yellow.

Comment for another thread:
Your worklog for this has to be one of the best ones I've read, so I'm sure I'll be referring to some things that you have done, to complete mine.  Yours looks great BTW.

looks tight!
yeah, they smoke quite a bit in the japanese arcades over there and it shows..
krylon fusion paint (plastic) works like a charm on the monitor surround, thats what i used..
i never realized how silly that plastic marquee looked till i looked at your pic..i dont know what taito was thinking when they made those things..
have you fired it up? or got a stepdown converter for that matter?
ballast work?
looking forward to seeing more of it .
:)
welcome to the club  ;D

So far, the only thing I've done is cleaned it up a bit.  I don't beleive I'm going to keep the marquee at the top.  It really doesn't fit, and the speaker pod above looks great by itself.

I haven't plugged it in yet.  What step-down converter would you recommend?

Thanks!

I cant find the link to the one i bought, ill have to look when i get home..
any quality US 120V to Japan 100V voltage adapter will do.
there little you can do about the frequency differencial between our two countries without spending some dough though..
60hz US / 50hz japan.. .
the cab is rated 100w (solid) so i would not plug it in without a converter ,or risk loosing you monitor.. our faster 60hz cycle here and the increased volatage is a little too hot for the japanese hardware for my liking...
i dont even dare leave the thing plugged in WITH a converter..

I found this one:

http://www.voltageconverters.com/japan_voltage.html

It's a 300W model, which should be more than sufficient correct?

After I got home from work, I looked at the ratings for the cabinet.  It requires 100V, and 110W...so I'll the 300W model should be perfect.

Well...I haven't really gotten rid of any extra parts.  I have some extra stuff from inside the cabinet though!  I found some button hole plugs and a thumbscrew (which is slightly bigger than the ones that hold the bezel in place...but I haven't found a place for it to go yet).  I''m not going to be using the marquee above the speaker pod...so that'd be the extra part.

I've received all of the parts to get it up and running...the jpac, ArcadeVGA, a mostly new computer...XP1600, 256MB PC2100.

I set it all up, and it booted up first shot...I was damn happy.  I just need to get the control panel fixed up, and it'll be ready for some gaming.

The lights on the machine do not work...I'm guessing this is because I disconnected the power supply in the cabinet...so I'll have to look into that.

I'll post pictures later tonight.  I need to re-arrange some of the parts that I mounted on the PCB tray.

Yeah...I've noticed it isn't as powerful as needed.  The XP1600 and memory is just something I had laying around...but the board will support up to an 3000+, so I have room to upgrade.  Most of the games I've tried so far have run great, so I'll be entertained for a short while.   :)

wow, yours is in so much better condition than mine!!

yep, gotta reccomend that plastuc paint - it completely transformed the  yellowing plastic to its former glory on the screen surrounds and speaker units....

Yeah, I saw the pics of yours...that really sucks.  I found all this bad info about Arcade Infinity after I did the Buy It Now on ebay.  I had to contact Jack again and check that the shipment was insured...which it was.

I painted the monitor surround with some satin black Fuzion paint.  It looks so much nicer, but it really doesn't match the rest of the white cabinet very much...so I might look into painting the rest of it somehow...but that'll be a project much later on.

The chrome bars that hold the speaker pod in place were rusted a bit, but some steel wool cleaned them up...they look new.

Here's some pics!

Aliens vs Predator intro:

Again:

The PC mounted on the pcb mounting board:

After sliding this in, I realized I mounted the power supply in the stupidest place possible...so I'll be relocating that to the side of the cabinet itself.  I think some big pieces of velcro will hold it nicely.

Shot of the inside, from the backside:

You can see all the fantastic electronic stuff that makes all the magic happen.

I installed MAMEWAH, which has worked so much better than I was anticipating.  So far, everything has been successful.   :D

Thanks!  Yeah, I'm definitely going to setup a new control panel...the 4 buttons aren't going to cut it.  I'm still waiting to hear about the replacement chrome panels that someone else was looking into.

I don't know how much they normally go for...I got this for $405, plus $150 shipping.

that'll be me with the chrome panels...

dynagod is looking into seeing how much he can get them done for.. there are, sadly only 4 people interested so far - someone else was interested, but is yet to commit.. (mindofone - the trackball isn't gonna happen i'm afraid... you still down for one?) , which means they are at $50 a set right now.., that includes a coin panel, the control panel, and a custom transparent water decal sheet

i'll be getting mine running over the weekend....

that plastic paint is good huh?? looks like i'm the only person sticking with the original white colour scheme...

Yeah, I thought it was you...was just too lazy to make sure.   ;D

50 for the set of control panels seems like a deal to me still.  Trying to make it myself just isn't going to look as nice as a laser cut piece of metal.

I liked the Fuzion paint.  It went on real nice, and the plastic looks as if it was molded that color.  I didn't like the white around the monitor, so I went with black.  I don't know what color to paint the control panel area yet.  That'll probably get painted white...I haven't decided yet.

Good luck getting yours up and running.  I'm working on getting the speakers hooked up in mine.

that's a very easy job, you should do a PC speaker hack like me and dynagod did and get the controls installed in the card slot!!

I'm updating my cab journal this w/e if you want pics

I know it's a Nanao...but I'll have to check when I get home about which model.

I got a microATX board for the system.  I was able to mount the motherboard, the JPAC, the CD-ROM and HDD all on the board, so it can slide out all at once.  I'm mounting the power supply onto the side of the cabinet.  I just picked up some high-temp velcro for it today...so I'll just need to disconnect the power before I can slide out the board.

I have to mount the voltage converter inside as well.  I was surprised about how short the cable from the wall to the converter was...I have to get an extension cord for it.  So once all that stuff is mounted inside, it will be a bit more crowded.

I found a speaker to hack...I got the circuit board out already.  I picked up a molex connector today to make the interfacing between the circuit board and speakers a little cleaner.  Fun stuff!   :D

I looked at your journal when you put the speaker mod up there...and I thought I was looking at my own.  I'm pretty sure I used the same model Altec Lansing speakers you did...the circuit board looks exactly the same.   :D

I've got two big burns...one inside a cup holder, which will be easy to hide, but the other will require a bit of sanding to make it even with the rest of the panel.

Right now, not much has been done since the speakers.  Just waiting to get the buttons finished up so that I can play some of the other games that require more than 4.

Thanks for you help with the panels btw.

well, if you have cig burns in the drink holders, I just ordered some ping pong bat rubber to place inside them as an inlay, i cut some cardboard discs to size to test it out and it will fit neatly once cut and glued.. sadly the rubber only comes in red or black, so I went for black.. the rubber is nobbly so it serves as an additional grip.. I'll post up some pics once i get it... I also just resprayed the blue CP housing with krylon fusion just to clean it up a bit....

I also ordered some free neoprene samples from a supplier, in the hope it would be thin enough to use for the same purpose.. if it is, you can have the neoprene!

I should be working out how to attach laptop clip on trackball to the right side of the cp housing tomorrow nigh, thus not having to use a mouse anymore.. and the wireless keyboard mod works a treat!

the panels have been ordered, after much deliberation I had to leave the button layout as it is as its the only way to fit four buttons horizontally, due to the framework underneath - it just means you'll have to reconfig your 6  button capcom fighters controls slightly...

I'll be getting the decal sheets printed very soon too....

can't wait to get em!!

*edit* DAMN! the trackball worked out really well!!

these babies cost about 4 - 5 dollars on ebay.. bargain!

step by step fitting here...

I'm sure they are still 7-button, just that the row of 4 had to be the bottom row due to the metal brace underneath.

That trackball is damn sweet!

yes, they are still 7 button, and are still the same layout as the original CAD grabs you've seen..

snap those trackman trackballs up guys!!!  it's a breeze to install!! just try and snap the case together first time as prying it open again after painting will scratch the paintwork!!

any Q's let me know!! good luck!!
