I made a stupid mistake.

Your skin should still be in the \layouts folder...unless the installer deleted whatever was present in there...your \ini\mame.ini etc. have probably been overwritten by the stock ones 

Sounds like you have some re-configuring to do...I'd recommend you grab the latest beta from the ArcadeOS/MAMEWAH board @ MameWorld.  It is stable and you would have to reconfigure to some extent anyway if you decided to upgrade later.

Delete the \files folder to get rid of lists.

I worked for about 4 hours last night.

I made a backup of my install directory as soon as everything was cofigured (just in case).  Of course it's easy to say that now.  I've not tried configuring custom lists/favs yet, so more fun to come!  In addition to adding more emulators!
