Mamewah will not recognize new layouts
« on: December 30, 2004, 12:14:49 pm »
OK.  I feel dumb.  I've read everything I could find on this, but I still can't get Mamewah to use a layout other than the standard one. It just refuses to load it and gives me the default layout every time. I've reinstalled Mamewah several times, even tried going down and using the setup program.  Still no luck at all.  I know others do it quite easily.  Just not sure what I'm missing.  Followed jcrouse's tutorial--no luck.

I really want to use the software--if I could just get it to work. . .

ANY IDEAS???

Thanks,

Rich

Ok. Inside of the layour folder create a folder called "custom". In your mamewah.ini file point to this folder like so:

### Misc Options ###
layout                      custom

Now in the folder you need these files (for mame)

mame.lay
mame-main.jpg
main-message.jpg
main-options.jps
main-art1.jpg

Now you need an INI file in the ./MameWAH/INI folder with the same name, "mame.ini" and it will automatically look in the "custom" folder for the appropriate files named "mame". That's really all there is to it.

Good Luck,
John

OK, progress.  I did it just like you said, John had tried about every other naming practice out there and those didn't work) and I can now see my art.  The added complexity is that I'm doin a cocktail table and trying to have it display vertically. It displays vertically, but not full screen top to bottom. I'm using Mrsalty's layout.  It's good to be getting closer.  Suggestions on how to get Mamewah to view in full screen vertical?

Thanks.
Rich

Further progress--got it full screen by setting Pivot Pro to 90 degrees rotation!  Now if I can just get the snaps to appear . . .

Howard Casto mentioned a product called iRotate in another thread. It appears to be similar to Pivot Pro with a few possible advantages. May be worth a look. I'm not sure what snaps wouldn't show up. Are they named the exact same as the rom and pathed to correctly in the ini file?

Also check that Mame by default calls the Snaps folder "snap" minus quotes.

Maybe just sonething that simple.

Got things working (except the snaps) in vertical mode, except that when I play the games, they seem a bit jerky--not bad, but I can notice it.  I'm currently using pivotpro.  John, I noticed on an earlier thread that you are using this set up and it works.  I've got a PIII, 1G w/256MB.  Is the jerkiness something I have to live with with pivotpro, or are there ways around it?

In my cocktail I only run Mame games. And only the classics, no chd files so my setup doesn't require a lot of horse power. This may be the hardware vs. software rotation issue that Howard frequently speaks of. My system is only a PIII=933 w/512MB and Windows XP SP2.
