The Ultimate
« on: November 30, 2004, 02:55:36 am »
gday everyone, this is my first post, im currently in the early stages of my first cabinet. I've got myself a few sheets of mdf from the hardware store and some controls from ebay and the bid for my coin mechs are goin off in 4 mins. I'll start a site soon and record my progress, its all comming together, i just cant decide on a monitor. I know i dont want a computer monitor cause i want some thing about 24" plus. For the quality of picture, are arcade screens or a tv the way to go? I want it to get the best result i can. Any help would be appreciated.

Theres a working 50" sega rally screen over at http://www.highway.net.au for $350 US for anyone living in NSW. That would be the ultimate but i wouldn't want to pay postage to my house.

I won the bid on the coin mechs too. 4 mechs for 20.50 AU plus postage, not bad. Theres another item checked off the list

cheers
Owen

Wow, I am not sure if anyone has asked this question yet today.  :police:

Go back a page or two. The tv, versus computer screen, versus arcade monitor discussion comes up ALL THE TIME.  :police:

Or try the very first thread in the forum. The FAQ thread.  :police:

yes the question is asked alot, i tried to get a thread going for peep's inputs about their experiences with particular displays w/o much response.   food for thought: you'd think that Betson or WG or somebody could develop a display that has what we all want (ok at least what *I* want :P  )
a hybrid arcade/pc display 20+ inches that can accept the 15-31khz for older and contemporary signals.  Plus it would res from old cga stuff to 1024X768 for more modern computer based games.

obviously some folks could care less about pc games.. some folks could care less about cga games..  but a quality display that could cover the scope would take care of everyone and generate some serious business for the company dishing it out. Look at the business Betson and WG has gotten via word of mouth advertising.
o well, maybe by the time i get everything together to build my cab such a product will be out.  (here's to dreaming)

You are talking about what is commonly called a 'presentation monitor'. I've used some by Hantarex and NEC they can go up to 36 inches I believe. They are not that common anymore, as they have been superceded by large flat panel displays. They wer not perfect - most tended to have seperate inputs (S-video/RGB/VGA) so it was hard to have just 1 cable supporting all signals. Also, a lot of them line doubled the 15Khz signal up to 31Khz - so while it looked good, it was not the pure 'arcade exact' signal you could send it.

In more recent times, the WG 9200 and the Betson Imperial both do EXACTLY what you talk about, I believe. the only catch being perhaps a top res of 800x600 not 1024x768 but I am not sure on this. As far as I am aware these can display all(?anyone?) arcade games in their authentic resolution, apart from Vector games.....

thx for the reply Silver-
course theres been alot of discourage reports about "issues" w/ the WG and the Betson, just frustrating.  and the 800x600 ceiling isnt good for Virtual Pinball, but perhaps acceptable with most PC games that would be good for arcadecabs (since there are some nifty side scrollers and what not still be developed by folks wanting to create  a modern version of those old shooters).

Anyone sporting 1024x768 on their betson or  WG (or any other type of Arcade/hybrid monitor)?

i'm wondering bout Hanterex.. havnt heard many reports of their products lately-- if they have issues like those reported about WG and Betson.
