How do I list my folders in XP?
« on: November 25, 2004, 10:21:47 pm »
I just got my first computer with windows XP on it and I'm trying to run mame from the command window.  The problem is that I don't know where the .exe files are located.  I put the mame folder in "my documents" but at the c:> I can't change directories to run it.  Also, is there going to be a problem because of the space in my documents?  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

In XP My Documents usually located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents
The space should not prove a problem however for easy use I would move the mame folder to the root of C:

P.S. This may be better in the Software forum.

Thanks guys.  Yeah I know how to change directories but I didn't know where they were located.  I've never used XP before.  I moved the mame folder to c:\mame but now when I run it I get an error message about screen resolution not set properly.  I changed the resolution and mame runs but now everything else looks horrible...  Looks like I won't be running mame on my new laptop...

Keep fiddling with it. I run MAME on my XP laptop often, and everything looks great.

Maybe delete the mame.ini file and start fresh?

Goto microsoft's website and find the XP powwertoys.  Get the command prompt form here powertoy.  This adds a right click menu to will open a command prompt from the folder you right clicked.

although this isnt somthing for a "new to xp" user , others may find it usefull

one of the first things i do when i install xp or 2k is goto

hklm/software/microsoft/windows/command processor

and change compleationchar to a 9 ...
this makes the tab key finish whatever your typing in the command prompt .. for instance you would only need to type
cd docu<tab>
and it would put documents and settings their for you ... extreamly usefull if you do alot of work in the command window ( and most mame users do )

if you dont know what hklm is .. then you shouldnt be messing with it to begin with

for me this is not entirely correct..
the command processor is not located in windows, it is located directly in microsoft. and the right place to toggle this setting is not in hklm.
the right place is under the second one from the top. hk current user..

this is the case in my xp. maybe this depends on how you have setup the user accounts in xp or something. well i dont now.

but as you said, this is a very good thing
