Thanks Dave, I've seen those but I'm not convinced they are what I need.
As I understand it the XBox analogue controls have variable sensitivity.
They aren't like normal arcade buttons, ie On or Off. Rather, it appears to be a volume control type thing.

I'm happy to hack the XBox pads etc but obviously for arcade use I would need something a bit more hardwearing than the XBox buttons.

The cabinet itself will have MAME on it as well, (modded XBox).

I've settled on hacking up a Gamester Stick for my digital controls.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/jdpyle1/controls_xbox.htm

As far as I see it, there's no point emulating analogue controls with a digital stick, plus using a dedicated analogue stick just isn't going to give me the accuracy I could obtain just using the Xbox thumbsticks.
My idea of an Xbox cab is simply to use the Xbox in place of a PC, thus it requires slightly different approaches to the controls and video that are needed for a PC to MAME cab.

What games do you wish to play that require analogue controls?
Most dedicated Xbox games need analogue, and thus aren't really suited to a cabinet. You could always have the joyports accessible and thus simply plug in the controller of your choice in, if analogue controls are necessary. It's not the most aesthetic solution, but is certainly the easiest, and most likely the best.

yeah i'm doing the same thing (modded xbox in arcade cab) i am intending on using it to play any and all emu's (not just mame) but i had also hoped i could play some arcadey xbox games IE: Dead or alive 3 crazy taxi 3 etc... has any one played these types of games with non analogue controllers, i assume they'd be playable other wise how would the x-arcade sell? since its marketed for just those types of games (as well as mame)

also any one know about running an xbox with an arcade monitor? can this work or does it have to be on a TV?

Some games require analogue controllers, such as OutRun 2 for example.
Using a digital joystick won't register any steering, but using Ultimarc's Xbox Adaptor, I think this could be rectified!?? It'd cause a lot of oversteer, though, if it did work!

Some arcade-style games, such as Soul Calibur II, and the Capcom 2D fighters are playable with digital controls, as this is what they were designed to use.
Pro Evolution Soccer is playable, too, I think  ;D

As for running an Xbox on an arcade monitor, it's certainly possible as the Xbox can use SCART, to split the R,G,B and Sync signals.

There is a good thread explaining it here:

cool thats all i was intending on running, stuff like crazy taxi and out run i'd use a steering wheel anyway.
so do you think/know if dead or alive 3 would work (its originaly an arcade game to isn't it?)
but yeah its mainly fighting, driving (for which i'd use a wheel) and shooting games (where you shoot the screen) my main concerns are would a Xbox/PS2 lightgun work on an arcade monitor. and also i guess would a ps2 connect up as well, but seeing as you say an xbox can then i'd assume a ps2 could as well. see i plan on useing the x-arcade encoder boards (not their controllers) found under their new DIY section, as they can be hooked up to PC PS2 Xbox and GC so it sort of covers it all :)

I currently have my own arcade conversion going. It was originally a sega 2b cab, but now it's being converted into a Mortal Kombat cabinet. I'm using an xbox to emulate all mortal kombats.

Purchasing those x-arcade or kb/mouse converters is fine and all. Personally I went with the guts of mas system sticks for mine but I wanted multiable systems. But what I've found to be the cheapest method is cheap xbox arcade controllers. They're basically a plastic version of real arcade controls so the boards in them can be wired in easily to work with real arcade buttons and switches. 20 bucks and you have your acade controllers working on your xbox.

as far as hd's go in xboxes, now a days you can install as big as IDE goes. I've done 300gb hd's in xbox, I suggest 250gb 7200rpm 8meg cache, can usually find those for a reasonable price (scored one for 140 recently).  HD switches are rad though (900gb xbox mmm) (does boot from f still protect you for live, or do you have to use a retail hd now?)

Soft mods suck, but using soft mods to do tsop flashes are always nice.

Have fun, enjoy, get pictures up!
