I have very little fear that such an amendment would be ratified. I believe that those in the legislature will remember that the purpose of the Constitution is not to restrict the rights of the people, but rather to restrict the power of the government.
The states can create and ratify and amendment w/o going through congress.
In Canada, where Gay Marriages are allowed. There was a major resistance to allowing Gay Marriages by the Insurance companies. As they will now be on the line to pay out more spousal benefits. But since the Lobbiest have little pull with the Canadian Government, there was little they could do too stop the bill allowing same sex marriages.
