Dreamcast + mame = defender??
« on: October 29, 2004, 02:28:07 pm »
Anyone know if any of the mame for dreamcast versions have either defender or stargate running in an acceptable rate?

I just bought a defender cabinet... Not it great condition but better then I originally thought.  It is going to hold my dreamcast.

Now I'm looking at adding an original dreamcast controlpanel if I could get both defender and stargate running.  I have a defender control panel for my mame cab... but thats a gauntlet cab and I would rather be able to make the defender cab look original.

I don't know how fast the MAME versions are on the DC but if they're too slow you could as an alternative buy Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits Vol.1.

Just a thought.

Do you have a DC?  Why not just try it out?  If you don't have a DC I'd be willing to test it out on mine but you'd have to do all the work figuring out how to set up the program.   ;)

Just a note on Midway's Arcade Treasures.  It is not compatible with VGA mode.  So if you are running Dreamcast through a computer monitior like I am, it will not work.

I never had any luck last time I looked burning them.  I was hoping someone here already did it.

And yes, I'm running on an arcade monitor through a VGA.  So I can't just run the other version.

I guess I will have to try and burn it.  I'm 1/2 asking now if its worth bidding on a defender control panel.

I have the cabinet, the dreamcast, but no defender control panel... but I DO have a mame machine next to it which I have a  mocked up defender control panel for it.  But it seemed a bit silly to have defender running with original controllers on a gauntlet machine, while I have a defender cabinet right next to it.

And if I don't get it working... I will not have to deal with swappable control panels.  Part of the reason to not add defender there..

Burning MameD was a pain (did it a couple years ago).  The weird thing was it would only burn correctly with a certain verison of Nero.  I also downloaded a Dreamcast mamed+170 roms image (torrent) recently that does not work (was burned/ripped incorrectly).  I'd like to try and take that image, and make it workable, and create a good iso out of it.  Obviously all the games aren't 100% playable (some have sound or frame rate issues), but I believe its the complete list for mamed.   More info on MameD rom compatiability issues here:

As for Midway Arcade Treasures, I don't have it, but has anyone tried doing VGA swap trick?  This usually works for games that weren't specfically coded with VGA support.

I've found several Dreamcast games that work on the VGA converter, despite not being listed as VGA compatible.  The Atari Anniversary disk works fine on my VGA monitor.  I mainly did the Dreamcast cab to get my kids more involved in my game room.  Surprise! Surprise!  My 14 year old is not impressed with dad's Asteroid machine or old pinball machines.  sheesh!  Bottom line, I leave the classics for the MAME cab.

FYI, MameD is not VGA compatible...you can boot it just fine, and use the menu to choose a pack.  Right after that its sync out of range  :(.  So give Midway Arcade Treasures a try using the vga swap trick.
