Degausing Coil Question
« on: September 16, 2002, 01:43:17 am »
Hi all,

I just bought a cabinet and the colours are all messed up on the bottom of the screen so im guessing it needs degausing. The monitor has affixed at each end a coil of wire which is connected to a small pcb next to the monitor pcb that has a seperate power input (which isnt currently connected), am i right in assuming this is a degausing coil ?? if i am right do i only need to connect the power when the monitor needs degausing or all the time ??

Thanks in advance

Mike Bissett

Normally the degausing coil is only used when the monitor is first switched on (a current is briefly sent through the coil to degause the monitor).  It doesn't stay "on"...just for a second when you first switch on the monitor.  Maybe the coil on your monitor is broken so some person disconnected it?  Or maybe it was being serviced and someone forgot to hook it back up?

If the degausing doesn't effect the discoloration, try moving the cabinet to a different part of the room and see if it changes (even a little).  Sometimes the power conduits in homes are enough to wack out some monitors when they are against a particular wall.

This is how i thought degausing coils were meant to work but i cant find anything that connects the coil (or the pcb the coil is connected to ) to the actual monitor pcb.. i think ill just hook up the power plug and see what happens  ;)

P.S. the screen was like it was before it was moved from somewhere else so i guess its not power conduits.
