using ps2 controller for mame?
« on: October 05, 2004, 02:58:31 pm »
Is it possible to use the PS2 controller to play MAME on a PC? Are there instructions on how to hack this to make it work. I realize that the PS2 controller is analog, so is there a way to hack it into a keyboard to convert it to digital or some other method?

I'm somewhat thinking out loud here and pondering some ideas, so any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

Actually the more I think about, I realize it doesn't have to be a PS2 controller. I'm looking for any controller similar in size to a PS2 or Xbox controller that has the small joysticks and that I can hack into a mouse to use for MAME games (i.e. in digital mode).

are you just wanting to use a ps2 pad on your computer?  How about just getting a playstation to usb converter.

why not get a usb pc controller instead?  there are a bunch out there that are clones of dualshock controllers.  you can get thrustmaster firestorms off of computergeeks.com for under $10

No, for a possible future project I thought about taking a PDA keyboard, hacking it and building a small joystick control panel out of the pieces from one of these other joysticks. Then, you can play MAME on a PDA with a joystick/controller.

It may just be easier to get a USB joystick and a USB adapter for an iPaq and do something that way.

But, all options are worth thinking about for creativity's sake.
