Problems with Mame32

After much toil, I have my control panel working. I've tested it on my regular computer and it works fine.

I bought a Dell computer for my cabinet and I've installed Mame32 on it, and I'm having some issues.

1. When I start up the games, the screen is shifts to the left. (I cancelled the direct draw option on the screen and it helped with this, but I can see a trail end of the right side which shows up on the left. Hence, I'd rather not go with this option if possible.)

2. There is no sound.

This is Mame Version 86 and its on Windows 98SE with an 800Mhz pentium processor with 128 gigs of RAM. Has anyone had any problems like this or have any suggestions on what I can do to fix the problem. Once this is fixed, I'm DONE and I can't wait to hook this baby up and play some Donkey Kong!

2. Make sure your speakers are plugged in correctly and is on.  Turn the volume up a little and also check the volume controls in windows to ensure nothing is muted.  Have you played any mp3's or cd's on this machine to confirm sound is working?

Within mame there is also a volume control = and - .  perhaps the volume is turned down low for some reason.  Also some games may not have working sound, other games have the factory settings for sound set low (midway games).

Go to Options - Default Game Properties - Sound tab
Ensure Enable sound and sound CPUs are checked as well as Use samples and Resample if sample rate does not match
Set sample rate to 44100
Volume attenuation 0dB
Audio latency 1/5

1.  I have a CD-rom with turbomame and my favorite roms I take to work & use on the Dell Optiplex computers we have here.  I also experience the screen shifting on some (not all) games, but mine doesn't bleed over.  It just shifts to the left.  I think it may have something to do with the built-in video chips on the Dell.

2.  Donkey kong does need additional sound files-  but you should be getting SOME sounds, just not all of them.  Here is where you can download the samples you need:

I tried everything that you said and no dice. I have been trying games with and without samples and it still isn't working. I also used the troubleshooting advice and deleted the cfg. files just in case. Still no change. If you've got any other ideas I'd love to hear them.

Are you sure about that Dell problem? Maybe I'd better return this puppy in exchange for an IBM. I have to do it tomorrow as I just bought this thing. Thanks for the heads up.

Have you played a music cd on there to confirm the sound system works?  Lets rule that problem out first.

Is sound enabled in your mame.ini file?

Update:

I returned my Dell for an IBM and everything works perfectly. I don't know what the problem was and I guess I don't care at this point.

Hey, I'm glad everything works for you now!!

Sorry I didn't respond earlier, I didn't happen to have my MAME disk at work that day.  But I tested it again today, and on the Dell computers at work it has the screen shifted to the left.  I should point out again that these are Optiplex GX series, I don't think you can just buy them from Dell.  They are for businesses only (someone confirm this?).
These all have the built in Intel Extreme Graphics Controller, and no video card installed.  All are running XP Pro.
At home, I have an older Dell Optiplex PII, but it has a built-in ATI video chip.  No shifting problems on that model.  And it runs W2k.
