dc vgabox mod...need a mentor in Northern NJ
« on: August 29, 2004, 12:06:19 am »
Ok guys and Gals, after a rather dry few months I finally found a VGABox on Ebay.  Now before I open this one up and sacrifice it like the 8 or 10 that came before it, is there anyone in the Northern NJ area that has done this mod before and could asist me in the procedure.  Or even test it on their setup.  I know its just one wire, and believe me I am fairly intelligent...(just not that good of a speller) its just been too long for me to botch up again.

As Always,
Thanks.

Jeff

ok, i tried hooking up the vgabox again, with both a "hacked" version and a "virgin" version.  both ways i got an image like this

i have it connected from monitor to switch box, then to vgabox and computer.  works fine with the PC but i get either that image or a bunch of lines?

any thoughts???

Looks like a sync problem.  How many sync inputs does you monitor have?  If there's only one, you'll probably have to combine the H and V sync outputs from the VGA box.

If the hacked version of your VGA box works on your PC then you did not hack it correctly.  A hacked version can only output 15khz which is not sync'able on a standard VGA computer monitor.   Secondly, if the picture on your arcade monitor looks the same with both hacked and non-hacked boxes, again, this indicates that you did not hack the one to 15khz correctly.

If you followed the instructions here:
http://www.arcadecontrols.com/arcade_consoles.shtml#dc2arcade
You should have cut wire #6.  If you accidentally cut the wrong wire (like #7 if you counted from the wrong side) then just twist it back together, and cut #6.

Interesting to note:  I have a VGA box that is missing one of the first six wires, so I had to cut #5 on the board (corresponds to #6 on the console cable).

are you plugging your vga box into a jpac or are you wiring it directly to your jamma harness?

So I take it you are still not functioning?  Did you confirm that your hacked VGA box will NOT work on a computer monitor now (since it should be outputting 15khz which a computer monitor will not display)?

One last stupid question...you did try manually adjusting the vert/hoz gain on the monitor right??  You know that all 15khz inputs are not the same and do require monitor adjustment to get just right (normally just sizing the picture...but sometimes the sync could be off by .5 or more khz).
