Anyone doing PSX prehacks still?
« on: September 16, 2004, 09:46:03 am »
I'm nearing the end of my driving cabinet project, and my next project is a dreamcast cabinet.

I'm a notoriously bad solderer, and am looking if anyone does the prehacks out there still.  I've been told that psx pads are much easier, so I could just use an adapter and connect it to the DC.  Plus, I could have the flexibility then of connecting my PSX or PS2 to the cabinet as well.

If you are willing or know someone, please let me know here.

you would have to specify if digital pads are fine for you or not.  there are ps2 titles notorious for not working with digital pads.  you also would not be able to acheive true analog function, and even simulated analog would be tough to come by.  i am unsure of whether the dc adapter supports analog or not.
that said, i have 4 digital psx pads and a 4 player parallel port adapter i may be willing to sell.  i could also wire the pads if needed.  that way, you could still have a pc in there.  otherwise, you may try getting an x-arcade controller.  they have adapters that are guaranteed to work with ps2, dc, etc.

I think hacking psx pads and dc pads are about the same in terms of difficulty  - at least for the psx pads I used.  However DC, pads are becoming scare so I think adapters are the way to go.  I have had good luck with these psx->DC adapters:

So far all of the ps2 games I have played have worked fine with the digital pads, but I really only play fighters w/ the ps2 in the cab.

I still see a lot of used madcatz pads in stores near me, but am curious, how can you tell if they are the multiple ground problem ones or not?

Another question gnateye, when you hack you pads for someone, do you provide a molex connector or just raw wires for them to deal with?

Is this any similar to the total control 4 pad (which lets the keyboard input emulate joystick controls)?

im not sure how to tell the diff in the mad katz pads, but i've always used the transparent ones. i could hack some dc pads for less $$ if the pads are provided, seeing as i cant get them as easily and cheaply as before.

check the pics out on my page. they're at the top

i supply a project box with a barrier strip on top, the user supplies the wires from the barrier strip to the controls.

If you use a PS-One sony H Series DualShock pad (aka the white one) you don't have to solder a thing.  Just open it up and cut the ribbon cable.   Hook it up to a cinch terminal or something that gets a similar effect and then hook wires from the terminal to the microswitches using .187 quick disconects.  Its so easy anyone can do it.

I remember another thread where we discussed this further (with pics)....and you are correct, hacking the ribbon cable was the simplest way.  So my opinion H-series is the pad of choice for ps/ps2 hacks.

Sompthing I have noticed on the H series pads are that the cable is slightly shorter than the dualshock 2 pads. (whatever series they are) If anyone wanted that peice of info but i think that it doesnt matter for what you will do with the pads.
