U3100 vector pics
« on: September 24, 2004, 01:22:37 am »
Is there anyone in here that owns a U3100 willing to snap a few pics of vector games running at 640x480 and 800x600?  It seems I don't have much of a choice left for 19" monitors and this one is somewhat highly regarded.  I just wish I could see what vector games look like on it before I blow 400+ bucks.

If someone could post some pics, that would be very cool.

thanks

Don't buy that for vector games!  The dot pitch is bad.  Buy a 19" computer monitor and you will be much happier.  It might even be cheaper...

When playing vector games please use at least 1024x768 resolution.  You might want to increase the beam too.  I love vector games on a pc monitor (though no super bright shots in asteroids).

I don't have pics but i had one.   Just depends on what you want.  If you want stellar looking vector then no, otherwise it is fine.  Vector games look acceptable to good in my opinion.  The authenticity you get for all the other games makes it worth it since most games are not vector.  Unless you are building a dedicated vector i think it is a good choice.  Also remember by default mame outputs vector games at 800 x 600.

I'm using a PC monitor right now and vector games look great.  Raster games look too good IMO.  I like the original look.  Vector games though, from what I've read, use the same tubes as raster games so I'm assuming they have the same dot pitch.  I guess they are just a LOT brighter and a few other differences.  What I'm looking for is an arcade monitor that can do multiple modes but it seems the only one is the NeoTec Trisync which needs to have a jumper changed *and* a different cable to switch between CGA-EGA to VGA etc.

Hey, I have a U3100 in my garage, I'll try to get some pics for you when I get it hooked up, but won't be real soon.

FWIW, vector games at 800x600 on VGA/SVGA arcade monitors look absolutley fine to me. Heck, at 640x480 I don't notice much of a difference.  I guess if you paused the action, put your nose up to the screen and then had a fine dot pitch pc monitor right there to compare with, yes the pc would look better.  Fact is, vector games look best...on a vector monitor.

That would be *very* excellent, thanks.  I agree, nothing beats a vector monitor but those seem to be in short supply (working) and expensive.  Maybe if I hit powerball Wed night.    ;D

AND! not only that.. but i just visited that page.. and the scan converters your selling do exactly the opposite of what most of us in the mame hobby  wanna do.. they're cga to svga converters, made to take a cga signal 15khz and display it on a pc monitor...

Heh, and we don't want a sharp clear picture!!!  we want a low-res non blocky arcade look.

If you made a scan convertor like that for about $50 that actually worked, you might get some intrest here ;)

I'm looking to get an arcade monitor because I *want* a blocky look.  I just want vector games to look OK.  :)

By "blocky" i ment the look you get if you display mame on a pc monitor without some kind of extra effects "pixelated" is a more correct term, sorry.
