dosmame vesa problem-help!
« on: August 28, 2002, 09:00:43 pm »
I've been tinkering around with dosmame 61 and arcadeos to try to get it working perfectly before I even think about hooking this all up to my cabinet/arcade monitor.  When I run dosmame directly from dos and try to play pacman:
dmame pacman

the rom tries to load, but all I am left with is a blank dos screen with the c:\mame directory at the top-just where I started.  So I figured I'd see if I could use arcadeos to run it.  Arcadeos starts, I hear the startup sound effects etc.  But when I try to run pacman from there, I get an error message:
No 16 Bit 1024x768 VESA mode available

When I try to run a different game, like Shinobi, it actually does work, but the sound is full of static, and seems to be going too fast-kind of sounds like fast forwarding tape with static-like Alvin and the Chipmonks, if you've ever had the pleasure of listening to them sing.  What can I do to fix this?  I really want to play pacman!  Why would I just get a blank dos screen w/ pacman, and why is the sound in shinobi screwed up?  Thanks a lot!
Trying not to pull my hair out,
LIAM
compaq 667mhz ess allegro soundcard
all works fine in mame 61 for windows.

Have you tried the suggestions given to you over in the mame.net forum yet?  There's a pretty recent post there with a good suggestion (about downloading scitech's display doctor... and it has a link in the thread)  Also, the suggestion to try to load it via the command line with the soundcard disabled is also a good one...     try   dmame pacman -soundcard 0

good luck... let us know back here too if that works for you or not...

Exact same problem I had with my Compaq 667,  I totally solved the problem by installing a second sound card (Soundblaster PCI 16) and new video card (Rage Fury). I'm also running Sci tech display doctor, it works great.   I set up my system to boot directly into dos in to Arcade os and then if needed, I can still access window 98.  Believe me,  the on board sound and video on the Compaq 667 is nothing but problems in DOS, it does however works good in windows.  What type of set up are you going for?  Boot straight into DOS or Windows?   Feel free to e-mail with any questions (creatine28@yahoo.com),  I can totally relate to your fustration, I thought I was going to have to give up on my system and just get a new one!
