Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of fictional journalism in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.

I am/was a hugh HST fan.  Reading all of his books, enjoying his movies and was anticipating The Rum Diary to finally be made into a movie.  He has a regular (well as regular as he got around to it) column on ESPN page 2 that is great for bathroom reading at work:

he had not written since the end of last year but did have one on the 15th which was longer than most and instead of his usual "Mahalo" he ended with "So long and Mahalo", don't know if that had a greater meaning then just an end to his article.
