Degaussing coil and Hard Drive?
« on: August 02, 2004, 11:05:36 am »
I'm curious if anyone knows if it is possible to erase a hard drive with a degaussing coil?  I am not overly concerned as my hard drive is over 20" from the face of my monitor.  Just happened to wonder what might happen if a strong enough magnetic force got too close to the hard drive.

It can be corrupted so be careful with the degausser.

What is a safe distance in your opinion?  Is the 20" enough or should I remove the hard drive first?

thanks

A manual degaussing coil can affect the picture tube from ten feet away so since the hard drive has some metal shielding itself a safe bet would be 3 feet away from the hard drive. The safest thing is to take the hard drive out while degaussing and put it across the room from the degaussing operation.
