HDloader.elf? Boot from MC?
« on: August 09, 2004, 05:58:35 pm »
I hear it's posible to Xfer the HDloader program onto a memory card and load it from there with the help of a DMS3 modchip.  Well I just so happen to have a DMS3 modchip so I'm trying to get this to work.

Here's a link to more information on what to do:
http://forums.psxforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=22700

I have the HDloader program but I can't seem to find HDLOADER.ELF...  Is it supposed to be on the disk?  Is it something I have to download somewhere?  Do I have to convert some file on the disk to reflect that name?

HELP!
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

That'd be sweet.

I don't like the fact that the disk spins the whole time you play a game and I want to check out how things go with the MC

BTW, yes I do know you can stop the disk by either chosing install before you start a game or by ejecting the disk after it has loaded, I just can't trust my GF to do that every time.

I'm not refering to hdloader.elf on the MC I'm just saying that when using the program normally (from the cd) the PS2 keeps spinning the disk while you're playing a game from the HD when this is not necessary so to stop it from doing so you can either a. select "install" and then hit "cancel" or b. eject the HDLoader disk after the game starts.

If you don't do either the disk will spin no matter how long you play and that is needless wear and tear on the PS2's DVDrom.

That's where my problem with the program lies, if someone starts up a game without stopping the disk I might be finding myself buying a new PS2 sooner than later.

So that leaves me looking for an alternative.  I came across the topic that I posted in the first post here and have been searching for HDloader.elf ever since.

I'm still wondering what exactly hdloader.elf is though...
Is it supposed to be on the disk that I have?  I'm not finding it.

put the disc in your computer.
there should at least be a system.cnf file in the root directory.  if you open this up in a text editor like notepad, it should have a line in there that specifies the boot file.  generally, this file is the elf you are looking for.

Having the HDLoader.elf on memorycard defeats the purpose. You still need a PS1 disc to boot it from memory card or a modded ps2.

Someone really needs to find out how to put a MagicGate signature to an ELF so it will boot on non-modified PS2s. If you can sign the ELF you can boot it either from MC or HD.

I have a Japanese PS2 and Japanese BB Navigator disc. The BB Navigator boots itself from HD (without a boot disc). You can download PS2 playable games from the Sony site. They boot from HD too without a boot disc. I can even see HDLoader images as files in the Games Channel, but cannot boot them because they are unsigned.

I have a modchip though b3atmania, doesn't that send the signature to the PS2 so it thinks the program is digitally signed?

The way I understand it is that just the memory card needs to be in the PS2 for the program to load in de.volution (sp) mode and all that is required is holding triangle during boot...
