Help please
« on: June 16, 2004, 04:24:07 pm »
Hi guys,

I have decided to move away from the concept of using Windows XP to run my Arcade Monitor on, I was just having no luck at all.

So here is my setup
Arcade Monitor
ATI Radeon 9600XT
AMD 2000+XP
Win98 Dos (from a boot disk)
ArcadeOS
AdvanceMame
512MB RAM
VGA.EXE

I have managed to get ADVV running using the advance cab toolset (running vgav.bat, advv -vgav)

This gives me a whole bunch of settings which I have adjusted to fit my screen better and all looks fine. I save them and have a number of modelines in the VGA.RC file. Lovely jubbley I say.

But when I try to run ArcadeOS, it just hangs, it says launching arcadeOS, and then the machine locks up and I get no further. I am running ANSI.SYS in my config.sys (found that I needed this)

I can post all my config files here if needed.

I can get my DOS displaying on my arcade monitor when I run VGA /L it shows all the selected Modelines. None of which are 640x480. These I can post if you would like as well...

Please can someone help me, I am hosting an 80's party mid July and the people who's party it is have sent the invite out saying that there will be Arcade games there as well...... Im going nuts trying to work this out. I thought that once I had the display on the arcade monitor that it wouldnt be that difficult. I have set arcadeOS with the incabinet=1 switch (I can post this file as well, although not right now, Im at work :D)

I hope that someone can assist I would be forever indebted to them :D (I have been trying to get my info from Purple Mame on how to set this up, and have been getting a lot of the files from Fraggles boot disk, although I am not using this boot disk, I have created everything myself)

Im sure Im close, but not quite close enough :D

Thanks in Advance(mame)

Antix/Paul

With a machine like that I think your better of running windows xp!

Why not try mamewah under xp, most people find it easy to setup. (Or if somehow Mamewah gives you trouble give DK or Kymeara a go.)

I tried XP, couldnt get anything to work. I posted some questions here about it, but didnt get a reply, so just assumed that other people couldnt get it working either.

It seems that svgawin didnt like my video card or something as when it was loaded, I cant run advv.exe or advcfg.exe. And, if I unload it they dont work either.

So I decided to go to DOS.

I had Mamewah working, but couldnt get it on the arcade monitor either. Until i used Powerstrip, but then it wouldnt run the games on the arcade mon as I couldnt set up the modelines for Advancemame because these programs wouldnt work.

Oh I forgot to say, I have a J-PAC as well.

Hmm just read this post

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=1421

Seems that others are having problems with Radeon cards... any one find a solution?

Maybe I need to put my GeForce4 back in the machine :(

Not trying to be rude... but the real soution is to use a newer fe, any fe just a newer one.  Also if you are using a arcade monitor then you need an arcadevga card, no exceptions.

You see in dos and with advance mame you can tweak the video modes because you are tweaking that particular program only.  In order to get a stable, constant, video mode for windows that your monitor can support at all times, you need those modes avaialable in the registry besides just having a card that'll output 15khz.  The only way to do that properly is with arcadevga.

Arcadeos is a dos fe, it won't really run well on anything but dos.  Also it hasn't been updated in years so you could do better.  ;)  The reason mamewah didn't work is because it just gets the modes available in the registry (as does most windows fes)  again... powerstrip only tweaks the current resolution (it's temporary) and if another program (fe, emulator, ect) tries to change the screen resolution it'll screw it up.  That is the root of your problem.  Arcadevga only displays 15khz modes in the registry and removes the others, so this pretty much can't happen whne using it.  I think I've beat the dead horse enough.

Hope that helps,
HAC

Well that doesnt really help, I dont want to spend the money on an ArcadeVGA... I dont have the money to do that. I really have to get it going with the setup I have.

Im going to try windowsXP again on my other machine which is a PIII550 with 256MB of ram and a Geforce2 vid card in it.

I see the ArcadeVGA being suggested here a lot, but I know that people get these things working with other cards. And, I have to as the ArcadeVGA is well out of my price range. (80US is about 160NZ$ Plus Postage)

I just cant justify that expenditure when I have already shelled out for the Jpac.

I think Im getting close though. Got AdvanceMenu working last night, so now just need to get Advancemame working... But that was in DOS. Im going to try for windows XP again now :)
