D9200 out of range error
« on: May 24, 2004, 12:28:44 pm »
Just replaced the TV with a D9200 over the weekend and it was great, except the "out of range" error for some games.  I have read lots of posts on this particular issue on this forum.  I am currently doing the following to work-around it.

1. Turn of "switch resolution to fit".  But this will cause other games not have its original resolution.  That sucks.

2. Select a fix resolution within MAME32, and this resolution does not work well for all games.  That sucks too.

It seems a partial work-around can be done with the following:

1. ArcadeVGA - still can not completley remove the "out of range" error.  I could be wrong on this.

2. To use RefreshForce - this too will not completley remove all the "out of range" error.

I am using ATI Radeon 9200 wit 128MB with MAME32 on XP and the D9200 is running at 640x480 @60Hz.  I would like to know more opinions on which one is better, ArcadeVGA or RefresForce to help avoid the "out of range" issue.  Plus, can I have ini file for each individual game within MAME32?  I don't want to change my FE. Thanx!

Well if you're having too many problems with it I'll behappy tot ake it off your hands at no charge.  ;)

I imagine the "Out of range" error comes from either a resolution or frequency the monitor doesn't like that the video card outputs. I would try forcing a resolution like 640X480 that all games could play at. This would also fill your screen since it's VGA resolution. That's the fixed resolution I've used for everything and it works fine. Don't worry if it seems a little high - we're not talking about a trinitron monitor here. The "B" quality of the screen should compensate for the high resolution.

Using a D9200 in this way is a bit like buying a 4WD off-roader and only using it to drive to the mall. The whole point of the D9200 is that it can display 15Khz native game resolutions as well as VGA.
The "out of range" must either be because the VGA card is being told to run at a custom resolution which it can't handle, or it is trying to run at 800 X 600 or higher. I believe only late model D9200 can handle 800 X 600.
A properly configured Advanced MAME setup or ArcadeVGA card should never give this error on a D9200 and will give the best possible display for all games, using all the capabilities of the monitor.
