Component output from a gfx card for TV use.
« on: June 26, 2004, 08:07:57 am »
*edit* Just noticed that I got the subject line wrong... I meant 'component', not 'composite' - it was late... *blush* Since I first posted this, I've made some headway, so I've added another question *

Having spent some time looking around shops and reading dozens (if not hundreds) of threads on this board, I'm starting to make some headway in the planning of my cabinet.

I've found a 21" TV (AWA 5170AV - a cheap CRT - not flatscreen - that does standard definition) that has component inputs and is a reaonable price (AUD 279) - the speakers are on the side, but one cannot have everything... Once I get a graphics card that supports component output, I'll get it. Now my questions:

1. I see that ATI have component outputs (via an adaptor); however, according to ATI's website, they are NTSC only. As I'm in Australia, that's not much use to them. I've seen that there is a way to wire up a VGA->component cable by wiring up the three RGB pins and their respective ground pins (such as listed here. So far, so good. For this to work, am I right in assuming that one should use one of the ATI cards for which ATI-produced adapters are available, as most other graphics cards cannot output at 15KHz through the VGA port?

2. I've seen some VGA->component cables listed on various websites, and mentioned on the thread linked to above. These will obviously have the same concerns - I'm right in my thinking, yes?

3. Both the previous options are for under Win98 (and WinXP later on in the thread). I'm planning to use FreeDOS or Linux, running AdvanceMAME. Obviously, the registry entries are completely useless, but if I use AdvanceMAME, am I right in thinking that this won't be an issue, as overscan-related issues will be avoided through tweaking of the emulator's display settings?

4. I see that Arc-MON supports (amongst others) Voodoo3 cards, which is exactly what my soon-to-be MAME box has. What I'm not clear about is what happens before Arc-MON runs: do I need to leave the TV off until it has to avoid damaging it, or as it cannot display anything, this won't be a concern?

Any advice would be most appreciated.
