Having to type OK to play games
« on: April 24, 2004, 04:49:08 pm »
how does everyone get around the having to type "OK" when trying to play certain games?

I am planning on building a cab and obviously it will only have buttons and joysticks.

Use No Name MAME and set them to be skipped, or you can move the joystick left than right.

I told you guys we need a better FAQ on this site. We should sticky one of these darned "How do I remove the OK screen in MAME?" just so it stops getting asked.  :P

Come on, you guys, it takes longer to post some sarcastic comment than it does to answer the question.  Sure it gets asked a lot, but give the guy a break.  And as for "RTFM," Mame's documentation isn't the most user-friendly in the world.  Sheesh.

Anyway, there's a line in the mame.ini file called "skip_gameinfo" and another called "skip_disclaimer."  Set both to 1 (default is 0) and it'll go right past the "Type OK to continue" bit.

Yes, it would, but then they wouldn't learn anything... they would keep asking questions that are already well covered in about a million different places (this particular question is so widely covered you can get an answer with a simple google search)  and subsequently cost saint extra money on bandwidth by making unnecessary posts.  Whoever thinks extra posts don't hurt anything is flat out wrong.  It clutters the board, it wastes our time, it makes the "search" tool for the message board even harder to use (due to 50% of the posts being junk)  and like I said, it costs saint money.

And for the record, Mame's docs are some of the most user-friendly ever.  The problem is you have to actually read them and they are long.  If you have a mame problem, you should consult the mame faq, the mame docs, the mame what's new, ect..... If you can't find the answer there (and if you carefully read I almost guarantee that you will) then and only then should you ask your question.  It's not a matter of being mean, it's just a matter of respecting the people who spent a lot of time and effort making these resources specifially so that the same questions over and over.

That's why it's called "frequently asked questions".  ;)

Mind you Saint is a nice guy, so he'd never say anything about the money.  And most people around here a too plain nice to tell people when to buzz off and do a little bit of research before they ask.  I play the part of the "bad guy" to keep this board trim and neat and under control.

So before you judge.... think about it and show a little respect.

if you consider a question is dumb and/or not worthy of your time then why not just ignore it! nobody forces you to click the Reply button.

True, sometimes these basic questions do clog up the boards somewhat, and they do compromise the useability of the search function to some extent, but...

I like the idea of this being a community of people helping one another, not shouting that they're stupid when they ask a question that someone else deems unworthy. My advice is that if you don't like these types of questions, don't click on the threads titled "Having to type OK to play games"! The fact is, there was always a time when each of us didn't know to move the joystick back and forth to bypass that screen.

(In my own personal effort to conserve saint's bandwidth, I made my post shorter than Howard's  ;) ).

I have to agree with Howard on this.  mame.net has an extensive FAQ just for this sort of thing.  It should be consulted first, Google second, and here third.

and like I said, it costs saint money.

Yeah, big $$$ on a single post.

Give it up HC. Stop being a d*ck. I think eveyone is pretty well tired of your act.

If someone posts yet another dumbass question, ignore it.

If your game is trolling for reponses, I'm guilty.
