Arcade Monitor PSU required?
« on: April 15, 2004, 09:00:10 am »
I want to build a mame cocktail cabinet, and currently have chance of getting a 19" jamma arcade monitor - but it does not have a PSU (isolating transformer?)

As i will have to fit an ATX PSU for the PC - I am wondering if the arcade monitor can be powered from it also, or will i need to have a PSU for the monitor as well?

If an ATX PSU can handle both - what power rating should it be?

Also a bit worried about space in the cab if i need to have both.

PSU (power supply unit) and isolation transformer are two different things.  You will need an ATX PSU for the comp in addition to an isolation transformer for the monitor.  under no circumstances hook up your monitor to regular juice unless you know for a fact that the isolation circuitry is built in.
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

If you know the make and model of the monitor you're getting I can tell you if it needs an isolation transformer or not. The safest thing to do is install one anyway. Remember that it is a transformer and it radiates heat and a strong magnetic field so it's placement must be properly thought out. Don't put it next to a hard drive or you'll erase/corrupt it! And don't put it too close to the monitor or you'll have picture and/or color distortion.

sorry i am still a little confused   :-\

the isolation transformer is mandatory for safety reasons.

what voltage actually goes to the monitor itself (i am in UK so mains is 240v)?

does it need a "switching power supply" to reduce the mains voltage down?

many thanks for clarifying the situation.
