Bottom of screen clipped? What's up?

Some games in MAME are clipped at the bottom eg MK1 the bottom of the picture is missing so that the fighters only appear from the knees up? Also some games have a small black square in the bottom right of the monitor. I have tried adjusting the Vertcal position of the picture but that is not the problem. Any ideas or help?

I would love to help but i think we ALL are going to need some more info.

mame version, pc or arcade monitor etc.
