Dead MK2 (Dynamo Cabinet)
« on: March 17, 2004, 12:18:39 am »
I bought a dead Mortal Kombat 2 machine in a dynamo cabinet with a 25" monitor last weekend.  Since it wasn't stripped, I'd like to try to get it working (at least the monitor).

When I turn it on, the led on the PCB lights up, the marquee lights up, and there's a buzz in the speaker.  Otherwise, I can't tell if the monitor works at all.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I can start troubleshooting it?  Everything I've read says to start at the power supply.  Since I'm interested in the monitor more than anything else, will that help?  Will I need a working PCB to make sure the monitor works?

First thing you should do (assuming you don't have them) is head to KLOV and download the manuals for the game. First things to check would be fuses and loose connections.

As far as the monitor, power the game up and look at the back of the tube. There's a heater filament in the tube neck that should be dimly glowing. If it is, odds are the monitor is ok.

Here's an update:

I got the manual off of KLOV and checked the main fuse and all of the connectors.  I also checked the voltages going to both the board and the monitor (all were good).  After cleaning the connectors, I turned back on: still no video (nor did O see a glowing filiment in the monitor), but it didn't make the hideous buzz in the speaker.  It "bongs" once through the speaker, the LED's light up on the PCB and the sound board, then there are computer sounds (whizzing and chirping) from the speaker.  After a few minutes, it goes quiet then starts over again with a "bong".

I've been doing some searching online for the monitor chassis (it's WG 25" K7191) to see if I can figure out why it's not doing anything.  I didn't find a schematic for my chassis, but from pictures of the K7000, it looks like it should have a fuse.  I didn't see one, but it's pretty dirty; I'll clean it up a bit and look for the fuse there as well.

You're in luck, the monitor faq here: http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=14906 covers that preticular WG monitor. If you run into anything, start a thread in the monitor forum or send a PM to Ken Layton. He's an arcade game tech and should be able to answer specifics.
