New tech arriving ...
« on: March 18, 2004, 11:02:33 am »
Hi,

Imagine a device no bigger then a portable phone, that you can connect to any PC with an USB port, that you can carry anywhere and that supplies a permanent internet access with speeds up to 1500 Kb ?

Yes ... its coming here in 2 weeks for its experimental period, its based on UMTS technology and it seems to have a lot of potential for the "cab world" ... thinking for instance on loading the games directly from web sites (no local storing) and hi score worldwide share ...

I applied to be a tester ... hope they pick me ...  ;D

  • I want him in the games until he dies playing.

::snip:: seems to have a lot of potential for the "cab world" ... thinking for instance on loading the games directly from web sites (no local storing) and hi score worldwide share ... ::snip::

this is disturbing for many reasons, not the least of which is further encroachment of the "client/server" mentality amongst software companies who want you to rent from them instead of buying progs...  I would look with a jaundiced eye on anything like this as it has the potential to put you in a position of having someone tell you what you can and can't do with your own hardware/software that you invested hard-earned money in. I for one LIKE having local storage of the programs I use, as it means I can tell companies like Micro$oft to "kiss my bender" on a regular basis as I control what I do and how I do it and with what files.

On the other hand, the transfer rate is a great thing if for real, and I'd love to see that applied to current hardware software relationships (like an interface between your cab PC and your main desktop PC - it would mean we could have simpler computers running the emulation for our cabs).

good luck getting on the testing list, love to hear more about this if you do!

Hi,

I see what you mean, but I was thinking more of using the programs on a rental base, much cheaper, and in a way that you don

Actually what I meant about the speed was that if it's real and sustainable that's a damn good transfer rate for USB, even USB 2 isn't usually that fast on average. I have cable internet myself, so the internet side of that isn't a big deal to me.

I'd like to see something like this used for networking in an environment where ethernet is not available, or as a secure and isolated networking path in an environment that already has broadband running via ethernet (in other words a file transfer path that is isolated from the household LAN by virtue of not sharing that hardware pathway) - i know this can be done with multiple ethernet cards, but still... could be cool.
