Vertical Games Roll
« on: August 02, 2026, 03:02:56 pm »
I had this working on my cab, then I lost the HDD with everything EXCEPT the OS. Then I found that the backup drive was also FUBAR. So a reinstall it was. Same version of GroovyMame (0.265) because that's the version of the ROMS I have. I'm using an HD6450 connected to a Trinitron 27" TV.

Native vertical game selects 400x288_51 which causes a roll.
With artwork enabled it selects 720x464i@60 and works.
If I specify the resolution in a command line (e.g. mame digdug -resolution 640x480) it presents correctly.
There is no "Creating mode" message for the 288p mode, despite modeline_generation=1.

Any ideas?

Do your 288p modes work in ArcadeOSD?

My guts tell me that your TV (or your installed modelines) have a problem with ~50hz?

Create a log file. If you don't know how, instructions are in Calamity's post sig.

If I force Mame with -resolution 640x480 it looks fine.

That doesn't matter. 640x480i is typically a 60hz mode. That's Basically NTSC (almost), any TV can do that.

If you're in the US (NTSC-land), your TV might only be capable of displaying modes close to 60hz. Which means it won't be able to display 288p as that requires a lower (slower) vertical refresh rate ~50hz (to give the TV the time to draw the extra horizontal lines).

Every TV is a little different, but: If the above matches you, you're using the default generic_15 or arcade_15 monitor profile in VMMaker, and your TV can't display the 288p modes, this is probably the reason.

Try using the default NTSC profile instead.

Ask yourself: Did the TV do 288p modes previously?
