Anyone know of a site for info on MAME clone games?
« on: March 10, 2004, 02:43:47 pm »
Mame has gotten out of hand for me - I don't need 4,500 games, half of which are identical to other ones.

Question - is there some site that lists how the clone differs from the parent, b/c just eliminating clones won't get it.  Examples of what I'm looking for:

One of the versions in Asteroids let you hide behind the high score and later ones didn't.  Ok, I can live with just the later version.

Afterburner is listed as a clone of Afterburner II (but they are different games).

Someone recently had a thread about the different Gauntlet versions and the difficulty was way different between them, so I don't want to randomly delete them.

One of the Gun.Smoke variants had Indians on about the third level and the other ones don't.

OTOH, I know some of the Pac-Man games are identical except for the name at the bottom of the intro screen.  I could deal with only one of these.

I know about MAWS, but is there a site that lists info like the above?

I don't think I've ever ran across one (with a comprehensive list anyway).

Just about the only one I know is that Final Fight (Japan) gives a shot of Jessica in undies which the World version doesn't  ::)

some clarification......

Afterburner and Afterburner 2 aren't exact the same but afterburner 1 was a prototype and afterburner 2 was the finished product.  They were kinda like different revision numbers of the same game.  Why sega decided to change the name midway through and confuse the heck out of us is beyond me.  :)

I never knew that.  I doubt anyone ever even noticed the II in the background of the titlescreen - I mean at the time you never heard anyone say 'oh have you played After Burner 2'...

I didn't know it until I did the research for controls.dat.  In many arcades they didn't even bother to change the marquee as it was psuedo expensive and a pain to swap out.  So it was extremely rare to see an afterburner 2 game in a "afterburner 2 cab."
