Some games horizontal shifted, others perfect
« on: September 28, 2024, 03:43:26 pm »
So I have this weird issue that some game are shifted to the left while others are perfect, forcing me to manually align them in mame.

I'm using super resolutions. Neo Geo it CPS games are perfect but some titles are wrong. I can't get my head around it honestly.

Using a Hantarex Polo Star Trisync. Didn't have the problem back in the day.

I don't post a log as this is a more general problem with mame.

Well, no idea. I can't get a good compromise for horizontal centering. Didn't have these problems in the past. Also since when does mame launch a second CMD window when starting a game? Makes debugging really annoying.

Usually games using different frequency will have slight shift, that's expected I think.

Make sure there's no rest of old H-shift corrections, these are recorded in the game's cfg. You shouldn't get shift differences in games that share the same frequency range (i.e. 15 kHz). Games shown on another range may be shifted, like those in the 24 kHz range. Different crt_ranges in a multi-sync monitor preset can be tuned so that their relative shift is compensated, making manual adjustments unnecessary. The existing pstar preset was tuned to fit my (long gone) Polostar.

MAME doesn't launch a second cmd window here. It sounds like you might be launching MAME with admin rights... is that a pre-HD5000 card?

Using a HD7850.

Indeed running as Admin. Recently switched to Win 10.

I will check for old H-Shift corrections but those should also show up in the slider then?

It's not with games from different frequencies. I got those covered. The pstar also has a daughter board for horizontal shift on each frequency. The problem occurs with 15khz games.

It was indeed admin rights that would open mame in another window.

Now I also checked the cfg's for a few games and there is no old nor new h-position slider setting.

You find a bad screenshot of Alien Sector that has a rather large black border to the right. Another one of MKII that has no border on the right side.

Another game with border would be Alex Kidd but there is too many to list and it's always the right side.

I played around for a long time with the CRT Mode lines and had no success because either one is off or the other. I could go and manually adjust them but the problem with that is that my frontend will lose focus as it basically restarts mame to adjust the modeline if I'm not mistaken.

It's weird, I didn't have these problems in the past.

Make sure autostretch is enabled in mame.ini. Better, make sure you download my package from github, unzip it and use the default ini. If you've been simply replacing the exe in an old folder, it might have inherited obsolete settings. At some point in the past couple of years stretching functionality in GM had to be modified to be in sync with mainline changes. This affected super resolutions.

That wouldn't fix it.

Why would the 1.024 value horizontaly shift my games when I put it to 1.224 for example? I thought this is for vertical adjustment?

crt_range0                15625-16200, 49.50-65.00, 0.100, 4.740, 4.000, 0.364, 0.092, 1.024, 0, 0, 192, 288, 448, 576

That's a vertical value, yes. But pushing it up artificially will increase the horizontal frequency too (i.e. number of lines). A higher horizontal frequency causes a narrower picture. Maybe that's what you're seeing, rather than a horizontal shift.

lol, yeah maybe. I used one of your lines from your pstar preset and it seems to be better , although means fixing everything else again (pots on the e/w board etc). this is such a pain. I wish there was a tool that idiots like me can use to simply get the values set and copy paste them. Never managed to do that with arcadeosd. The numbers never matched what I saw in Mame.

So it's much better already by just changing the 15khz line with your preset, then adjusting the rest in hardware.

I will be honest that after so many years of using groovy mame those numbers are still a mystery to me.

I tested 20 games now and the are all good except marble madness that has huge black borders but is centered. Weird.

How would one for example find the optimal vertical settings when we can't even stretch vertically.

Btw: a friend of mine wrote a code for me that will detect the current running game on my system and then set a value for a digital Pot that will stretch the vertical size for me. Pretty cool. When I leave the game it goes back to normal.

Marble Madness will have huge black borders because that how game displays graphics. It used 336x240 but most of time graphics is displayed in area of 296x240. Only balls on title screen are bouncing in full area.
