decal film for inkjet printers?
« on: July 28, 2004, 01:43:49 am »
I am researching different options for creating my custom side art and CPO, when I came across decal film material. This decal film comes in standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper size  and can be  printed on a color inkjet printer. The film is water based just like the decals that come with model kits.  It would seem that the decals would be easy to apply and you could overlay multiple sheets for large art work.

I was wondering if anyone out there as experience with this material?

Also, the price is $20 for 10 sheets.

Water and inkjet inks usually don't go along well. You'd need to make sure your ink is waterproof.

I used label paper on a cpo once.  It was great if you cover it with plexi.

It's worthless if you don't.

You can get vynil sign film off ebay that can print in some printers/plotters.

I actually bought some of this.  It is water slide decal paper.  Most online sources are retailers for a company called Bel Inc.  Once the decal is printed you spray it with Krylon Acrylic Crystal Clear High Gloss to seal the art.  After it dries it is like applying water slide decals that come with plastic models.  Basically soak, for 30 sec or so, slide the decal off the paper, and very carefully apply it to the surface of whatever.  And you're done.  There are two types of this paper clear and white.  Which you choose will depend on the color of your background and what you are adding.  for example, I chose white because there isn't a white color that the inkjet can make. I wanted a white image on a black background. So really the image is the negative so white from the paper shows.  The stuff worked great for me...I didn't even think about it for my mame...doh! It ain't cheap though.
