DK Bros. 2 player co-op Donkey Kong
« on: November 01, 2024, 10:09:34 am »
I have made a 2 player co-op hack of Donkey Kong.  Not sure how many folks out there have an arcade with 2 x 4-way sticks,  but if you do,  then this is a must for you.

DK Bros. is a two player co-op hack of the original Donkey Kong arcade game. It maintains all the original gameplay mechanics.  Two players working together simultaneously smashing barrels, collecting items and pulling rivets.

This release comprises of a program wrapper, romhack and a LUA plugin for MAME.  It is all bundled into a convenient and ready to play ZIP package.  You just need to provide your own "dkong.zip" rom file.  See project page for full instructions.

Features

-2 players are controlled independently in the same game.

-Each player gets their own hammers, and they can be smashed together

-The last player to take a hammer gets barrel control and retains control until the other player takes a hammer. The barrels change colour when P2 has the steering.

-Pulling rivets is fun with 2 players sharing the task. The fireballs spawn in a calculated safe position for both players.

-If one player completes the stage then both players complete the stage together but the player completing the stage gets the bonus points - unless you finish exactly at the same time.

-Both players accrue points independently but there is a combined score displayed in the centre.

-If one player dies then both players die.

-There are 7 lives shared between both players.

Note that it's only available for Windows x64 systems at the moment.

Pretty Cool.

How about making a  2-player  version of  Discs of Tron?

Its a crime that game didnt have linkable cabinets.   While the AI opposition is challenging..  it would be cool to be able
to battle against a Human Opponent, instead.

Not sure about the best way to do it.

You could have both controllers on a single Control panel, sharing a single monitor

Or possibly have Linked cabinets  (dual screens)..   where the player would always be the character in the Foreground, on their
own displays.

An optional mode to be able to fire more than 3 discs at a time (maybe 4 to 5 max), might be a nice addition... But not sure
if the hardware would handle it.

Another interesting thing to potentially try, is a Charged Throw... where if you hold the fire for x amount of time, the
released shot becomes more powerful  (faster travel?  slightly larger sized discs? )

Not sure what the Hacking Limitations are.
