Cool looking game Beats of Rage
« on: February 11, 2004, 03:07:21 am »
Don't really know where to put this thread, but since its software, I'll put it here.  They have versions for the Dreamcast and Playstation 2 as well as DOS.

Beats of Rage
From the website:
As fans of the 'Streets of Rage' series that originally appeared on the SEGA megadrive/genesis, we always wanted to see streets of rage 4. But the waiting proved futile, and streets of rage 4 never came. That's why we tried to correct this mistake and fill the void by making the ultimate tribute to Streets of Rage:
Beats of Rage!!

I'm a big fan of SOR too, back when it was called final fight! :P  Sheesh sega fans, they are so happy to play a rip-off of an original they forget about the original.  FF went up to like 4 or 5 if I'm not mistaken.  Of course you had to have a snes (which you should have had anyway as it's the better system).

Oh well I'm not here to rant, I just think that their SOR sequel more resembles a final fight game.  Probably due to the great snk graphics.  ;)

Regardless it's by far the best home brew game I've ever seen.  Bar none!

Anyway, I am very interested in the game developer pack.  It was going to be a secret, but this year I was planning on making a video game.  The engine I'm using kinda sucks though.  I'm going to contact the developers and see if they would allow me to use their engine for my game.  It's a ff esque beat-em-up so it should work well.

The best thing about developing for their engine is it automatically will work on dos, dc, ps2 and the xbox!

Btw, xp users... I've been told this game will run well if you run it through the dosbox emulation program.  It requires tweaking though and I haven't tried it yet.

Btw add this game to the sticky at the top of the forum please. :)

Heh I thought you might have something to say about this one HC :)

Well I thought Final Fight only went up to 3 on the SNES...I didn't like 2 or 3 much tho to be honest.  Of course Final Fight is the king but the SOR series (particularly the first one) were great on the Mega Drive (Genesis to most of you lot!), the music alone is worth playing the game for :).  Personally I never liked the SNES's pastel-girly-colours, but that's another issue  :P

Thanks for the XP tip - I'll give it a try before I attempt the DC version :)

Keep us posted on your game - I'd love to see a FF style game.  Is it me or doesn't anyone release scrolling beat-em-ups any more?  I only ever recall seeing 1 3d one in recent years, and it was crap!

Tried the DOS version in XP - it works but with a few probs, mainly it seemed to crash after completing Level 1...I didn't play around with it much tho, just straight double-clicked the exe.

The DC version is very good from what I've played so far :)  Look out for the enemies names, my favourites are Stinker and Dr Cheese  :D  If anything it seems a bit easy (I haven't tried Hard mode yet tho).  The bad guys don't seem to attack as much as I remember.  Definately worth the download :)
