Live streaming screenshot
« on: February 28, 2006, 12:22:24 pm »
I'm looking for some software that streams screenshots of your computer screen. I just want to have the equivalent of a webcam, but the video source would be what is output to my monitor. I also want to be able to log on to a website and watch that streaming desktop. And this needs to have virtually no delay. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

Or, you could not try to make the process so complicated and just use RealVNC to spy on whoever it is you are trying to spy on.

I'm trying to setup a conference deal. We have a conference phone setup, but I wanted to have our clients look in on our computer models of their products. I wanted it to be something simple where they could just watch.

Real VNC has a Java version built in. I haven't messed with it much but you could try it. You would have to foreward a port and then send them an address with that port number. Ex: 85.41.25.65:1000

They would go to that address and they should be able to connect. Just set the settings where they don't get control.

There is a lot of web conferencing tools you can use.

LiveMeeting by Microsoft should handle the task as you describe it.

I'll 2nd this.  I use gotomeeting all the time and have never had a problem with it.

I've downloaded REal VNC and set myself up as a server and a coworker up as a viewer.  There is quite a bit of lag between what I do and what he can see. I'm using SolidEdge, a solid modeling program, and rotating my models. While rotating only a few of the positions are captured and sent to his computer.

I just looked at webex and looked in on their tutorial and sample meeting. They told me that it would just depend on the users connection. I believe this, but what should be considered the best?

I was thinking I could simply set up a webcam infront of our projection screen and broadcast that. How fast can you stream webcam video?

I'll check out go to meeting

The company I work for does all its sales and demos over the web via webex.  So I use webex to demo our product on a daily basis.  Its a good product with lots of functionality, but can be expensive and the initial thin client download of webex can take time.  But once it's loaded on that local machine, then you can quickly join a webex meeting in seconds.

But regardless of the web conferencing tool you use.  It all depends on the speed of the viewer.  If they have a slow connection, then there will be some frame skipping on the viewers screen.

ok... now i have a more general question about the java real vnc thing. I have my server ip which is 12.345.678.9 and then I have my DHCP ip address which is 876.54.32.1. If I want someone outside of my network to beable to connect through my server to my computer how do I do that? I got it to work with my coworker just going to http://876.54.32.1:5800/ but that won't work for someone not on our network.

I am the suck at the internets...

you have to direct the ports in your router to the computer you set the server up on. Or turn DMZ on in the router.

Thirding GoToMeeting ... what you describe is EXACTLY the type of thing we use it for every single day. Webex will work as well (used that up until we switched to GoToMeeting due to pricing ... then they changed their pricing).

Both are easy and painless.

Cheers.
