Some of you have an issue with any classic game being set up with mame so make your comments etc. but you don't own it so you have no say so, period.

That said, I got this one at auction as a run down beat up Ms Pac conversion that was one step from the junk yard. The sides were solid though but painted bad blue. I have restored it to it's original glory and I am using a K6300 and I have 24 versions of Pac Man loaded, nothing but the Pacs.

Gee, not a good way to make friends.

However, nice job on the resto. It looks very, very clean.

That was not directed toward anyone other than the folks who jump people for how they handle their own property. I would never gut and mame my super clean space invaders but saving a Pac cabinet from the junkyard for mame use is different.

I think it looks great!
I say better for you to mame it as tastefully as you did, than to have someone slap on a quick coat of paint & stick a crappy kit game in there.

The CP overlay looks weird but the rest looks "sweet"!   :P
How much did it cost!? What were the worst parts in the restoration?

Congrats!  :)

Don't know what to say about the CP, it is the Namco part. Most graphics came from twobits.com. I wasn't thrilled about the application of the front graphic although the result was fine. I just wish it was a thicker vinyl so that imperfections weren't amplified. The bezel is super nice, well worth the $100 from twobits. I would estimate that I have about $600 in it total for the cab, art, PC/monitor etc. All the MAME buttons are on a plate inside the coin door so there are no actual external modifications to the cab. The internals are fairly much original as well. The PCB mounts are there, the monitor is mounted to the original rails. It would take less than an hour to fit it with a PCB, monitor and have it dedicated. I prefer the functionality of having all PacMan versions.

I wish I had taken pictures of the cab when I got it, it was badly dog eared, yellow T molding, no minitor or PCB, and the Mrs Pac conversion done on it was obviously a quick slap on of old crap trying to get a high price at auction (didn't work). But I saw a great oppertunity to save the cab and MAME it without trashing a classic.

I think you did a great job.  As far as the "purists", I bet they don't have a machine.
I have a dead super pac man that is pretty busted up too.  I think I'll save it from the heap like you did.  I'm inspired.

After a while, all of the parts of the old cabs will fail. The parts will become unavailable, and the technology to fix it will fade away.  If anybody doesn't buy that, try putting together a model T.

Mame saved this cab and dozens more from a landfill. It's better than it was when it was new, and it has saved it for another generation.  You kept it up in the true spirit of PacMan.

anyways, great job.  and a big public THANKS! for the Ms Pac bezel. PiperCub is okay in my book, he can do whatever he likes to his cabs...including give it to me   :D

NY_in_TX, I was just reading your comments here and thinking about your idea of using the player 2 start button as the fire button for Galaga. That should work just fine. I am going to load up Galaga on this machine and check out that everything works. I think I will still stick with just Pac games but I want to check out the setup. I will let you know how it works..

Such a nice cab--I don't know how you can resist not loading every vertical classic onto it--more will power than me thats for sure!  I would have burgertime, donkey kong, galaga, dig dug....anyways, great job!

I have two other MAME vertical machines and one horizontal so I can just play the other verts on those two and keep this one Pac only.

The sideart has been added since those pics, I will try to get a newer one posted.

Looks great.

Few people (not even me) can realistically knock anyone for doing anything with an early 80s midway cabinet. It is the most common cabinet on earth, and there is NO SHORTAGE of them. Heck, Namco is making more of them now (albeit at a much lower build quality). We are never going to run out of Pac-Man machines, and there may realistically come a time where the supply is larger than the demand. Restorers/bootleggers have been uncoverting these things in insane numbers over the last 7 or 8 years. There have probably been more Pacs/Ms. Pacs unconverted since 1997 the the entire production run of many classic games.

It does (sometimes) make me a bit sad though when I see nice Galaxians get "restored" to Ms. Pac-Man. Although there really isn't that much demand for Galaxians anymore, Galaga was just so much better.

Now the one Pac-related thing that does honk me off is when people convert any and every Mid-way cocktail to Ms. Pac-Man just so they can sell them.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

The thing that bugs me about the Pac franchise (and Galaga too) is the prices that these things bring.  Yes, they're very popular, but certainly not worth the price most people ask for a game that has thousands of units made.  I guess it's what the market will bear, but still...

Even the repro parts command a very high price.  A control panel overlay from Happs is something like $140 or more.  For a repro!  It's insane.

I know what you are saying.... It really HURT to click in the visa number and order the parts from twobits. $100 for a bezel $300 for art and another $70ish for the CPO, and a further $45 for the marquee. Nearly $600 for everything delivered. However, the quality was far superior to any repro parts I have seen. Of course the result is fantstic. I now have a MINT Pacman with every Pac variant on it. Sure I would have liked to pay half as much for the same result but I do feel that the result was worth the dough. I really wish I had taken pics of this thing when I got it. It was a wreck of a cab.

I think it's great!  My buddy and I did a similar project a while back, and it's been one of the very few cabinets I kept since I always loved the look of the pac cab... I did the same as you, or close, I put on just a couple of pac clones, super pac, pac junior, ms pac and I think crush roller... the artwork I printed up myself after asking a few questions of the twobit guy, he was a complete jerk (maybe I asked the wrong questions I dunno).  On the plus side at least you have "real" licensed sideart! :)

Not trying to steal the limelight, but here's a link to my project.

I doubt it was your questions, I never got the warm and fuzzies in dealing with them of their salty prices. BUT in being 100% fair, the end result was worth it all.

Your project is spot on, fantastic solutions there!

However, can't argue with you, the repro stuff looks killer.  Where's the pics of the sides?? ;)
