Advice Needed. Simple, no frills, idiot proof bartop
« on: September 28, 2020, 09:43:52 am »
For quite few years I have contemplated building a couple bartop cabs to give to family/friends for xmas. The 2 things that have always stopped me was cost (I would have to make at least 2) and the thought that I would become never ending Tech Support (which I am already, dont need more work :lol). Every time I think I have my cabs idiot proofed my nieces and nephews prove me wrong. I am only concerned with the guts, not the woodwork.

I have a few random LCDs layin around that I'm sure the wife will be happy to see go.

With all the options out there for the guts, what would you do? (encoder, comp/R-pi/multi-board, power)

Get a 60 in 1 or a Pandora's box.

Can you turn games off from appearing in the menu?  Something like Centipede if you don't have a trackball or Arkanoid if you don't have a spinner?

That seems like a very simple and idiot proof setup if you can somewhat control the games on the list.

Whats your end game Buick?  Who are you gifting this to?  How many games do they want to play in the end?  Mikes right honestly.  I almost feel like you have enough knowledge Buick that you could just make your own kit if the 60 n 1 or Pandora doesn't fit.

Brother (+wife & 3 monsters) and my sister (+husband and 1 rugrat). The 3 monsters are the ones that always manage to find the right combo of button smashing and menu scrolling to crash to desktop or lock it up solid. Never happens to me or my wife when we play it  :dunno

I looked more deeply at the 60in1 and the Pandora/s.
The 60in1 seems like the easiest way to get from point A to point B. Simple menu & nothing they can screw up. I wish I could add some other games (even if it means removing some already on it). I have to look at my cabs game list, there is a football game my Bro-in-law plays when he is here that I didnt see on the 60.
The Pandora option/s seems better bc I can remove stuff but couldn't really find a game list & there seems to be quite a few different versions. .

In all honesty the more I think about it an old PC, Tiny-xp would be best but it would need to be like I said bullet proof

edit: remembered the football game.. first in the damn list, 10 yard fight
