I was speaking specifically about the combination of this plugin and a Radeon (more specifically MY 7500...from my own experience, of course). I've simply found the D3D plugin to be more stable with fewer graphic glitches and higher compatibility. Again, my experience...
But you are right about the "common misconception" thing. I've heard that before, and it may have been true for early drivers, but I've never found that to be the case and all things being equal I always choose Opengl.
Once again, I have to recommend Pete's D3D. Your mileage may vary.
