I think it's safe to assume some people in here use Newsgroups...

Why do some files show up with a message like this:

[687 lines, incomplete]

[This is a multi-part message, of which only 1 of 44 parts are available.]
[These parts are unavailable: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43]

[To retrieve the incomplete message, use menu option Message | Join Sections.]

Is it because of my server?  or is it something with my client (I don't think..)?  or is it something the Poster did wrong?  Or something wrong with his upload?

I'm using Agent 1.93.  If I do what it says and go to Message/Join Sections it says something about how The Selected Message already contains just one section.

It is because all the parts of the message aren't available on your news server.  Usually all parts will make it to a server within a couple days.  If this happens often to you I would suggest a different news service.  I personally use Giganews and have been very happy with them.  They do offer a free 3-day trial (up to 1GB of traffic).  If you want to give them a try here is a link:

Yes this is a referal link.  I only get a referal if you continue to use them for 6 months though.  If you find you don't like them during the free trial period feel free to quit.

This is likely because the file you're trying to download does not have all parts on the server.  It's been split into 44 parts, only one of which actually is on the server.

This means one of several things:

1) Something happened in transmission and not all parts are on your server.  They may show up (usually within a few hours) or not at all.  If that happens, ask for a repost.

2) It's an older post, which the parts are slowly deleted off the main server.  No way to get them back.  Ask for a repost.

3) Your ISP purposely deletes parts of binary files on the server.  I've heard of it happening, and Adelphia seemed to be the worst of it when I had them.

4) Your ISP's retention of binary messages sucks.  In this case you should likely pay for a better server.

Thanks guys.  The thing that kills me is I don't really want to pay for an additional news server..ya know?  I've got one and MOST of the time I don't use it that much.  I'll get into News Groups you know...once or twice a year.  I can't ask for a re-post, because I asked for the original post and don't want to continue wasting people's time.  Maybe I'll just use that free trial.  :)

If you are not familiar with newsgroups there are a couple of good news readers out there.  I use xnews.  I can;t think of the other awesome one out there.  Also pick up winrar and a par program.

I use Forte Agent. I've tried xNews in the past, but Agent seems to be simpler to understand and has more features than you could shake a stick at.

I don't pay for a binary usenet service, my ISP (Verizon) carries most of them and all I ever really use is alt.binaries.emulators.mame.
Files are usually available on Verizons server for about a week before parts start to go missing, so it's plenty of time to grab what I'd need.

I use Ultrafeed for a news service provider. I have zero complaints, it is an uncapped unlimited download for 18$ a month (Take THAT, Easynews!). Decent retention, great gruop selection.

I use Newsbin to harvest binaries. There are other freeware binary getters, but I like Newsbin A LOT. Get Free Agent if you want to read text posts and respond to them efficiently.

Learn to use Par2 files. If you are missing just a segment of a full binary, Par2 will put it back together for you. Sounds crazy, but it works. Quickpar does this, and it is freeware.

does anyone else use SWB?  or know if other cities servers are more comprehensive?

For now I signed up for 1 month or 10gb at giganews.  I requested a post and someone was nice enough to hook me up.  I gotta get that.  but after that..I'll be looking for a cheaper alternative.
