Vertical TV for Home Game Systems?
« on: January 19, 2004, 03:30:16 am »
Hey all....I know this forum is mostly about arcade monitors and cabinets and whatnot.....but I'm curious as to what would be a good option for a TV or monitor for use with home game systems like the Sega Saturn or Dreamcast.  Specifically, it would be for vertical scrolling shooters.

Would it be wise simply to get a 20" normal TV and keep it permanently rotated?  Is there anything designed specifically for this?  Thanx in advance!

I think that consoles adjust to everykinda screen! I personally like to use the Wide-Screen that my folks have in the living room, the problem normally comes when you want to connect several consoles to one screen, PC or Arcade montior!  :)

I'm still thinking and resarching about connecting like a PC and a Dreamcast to a Low res. monitor that was very popular with the old arcade games!  ;D

Hope this helps...

BTW: I think you should have posted this thread in the consoles section, has more impact there!  ;D

Both Saturn and Dreamcast have RGB (15kHz) output. Perfect for connecting to an stanard resolution arcade monitor. You might need to extract composite sync (or even H- and V-sync) from the composite video signal with a small circuit http://www.national.com/ds/LM/LM1881.pdf

Most consumer TVs are not ment to be permanently rotated, nor are they calibrated for that purpose.

Tvs will usually rotate to vertical OK if you do it when they are brand new. They never seem to degauss correctly if you do it on an old set though.
