Challange:
The most compact, fully enclosed rotating 3 panel control panel.
Looking for ideas for a compact, fully enclosed rotating 3 panel control panel for a "smaller" cabinet, something like a two player cabinet like Joust, Centipede or Pac. Reason being that I have some co workers interested in the idea of an arcade machine(which was even easier with the recent MaximumPC article,) but they don't have much room in there dwellings. Not to mention, its a worthy project, provided you are interested in the rotating control panel.
Like I said, looking for ideas.
An unmodified Pac cab would have to be a 4 panel job with nothing but button-only layouts, as the control panel angle is 90 degrees, and the clearance between panel and monitor is VERY right (not to mention the fact that the stock panel also overlaps the glass).
Of course, if you used a horizontal monitor, and got new glass, then you could mount the monitor further back in the cabinet and give yourself a bit more room to work with. That would also make it possible to do a 3 panel job instead, with a Pac layout, a streetfighter layout, and like an Asteroids layout. Clearances would be too tight to put any sticks, spinners or balls on the 3rd panel.
A joust would probably be a lot easier, although there would be no way to make the panel look original.
I have kind of tossed around the idea of doing a "slide in, and then rotate and slide back out" panel on my Defender cabinet, allowing me to do the all important Q*Bert panel, and MAYBE a trackball/Asteroids panel as well, in addition to the stock Defender panel. That would be nice, as it would allow me to use up all my NOS Willis overlays at once. =)
I guess I just realized that would qualify for what you are talking about.
