The Long Dark - Great game
« on: May 25, 2016, 12:05:57 pm »
I picked this up on sale last week and the experience has been pretty amazing so I thought I'd mention it in case anyone is interested. I think GOG has it on sale for $11.99

The long dark is a survival sandbox game but different from others I've seen. Only one objective...Survive.

The basics of the game is you start out with almost nothing and have to explore and forage in order to survive. Choices, suspense and exhilaration at finding a cool new location or item.
Graphics are fun and immersive in a stylistic way. Great lighting and sound. Best of all if you have a medium to low powered PC you can still run the game.
Gameplay is often slower paced than a typical FPS but there are thrilling moments. Death is permanent...and I am really glad I did not look up any spoilers/Maps that would remove the "Lost in the woods" feeling.
Stats like warmth, Hunger, thirst and overall condition lead you to explore new areas and take risks for the right reward. There is a basic crafting system, and Items wear out if not repaired.

Quote
The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies — only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster.

Is it set in a real world or is there supernatural/magical elements to it?  I love these kinds of games, just curious about setting.

You make the game sound really interesting. But if I'm being honest, that's probably one of the most boring game trailers I've ever seen.
If you can read this, it means Photobucket's money grab ruined my signature photos.

Real world, no supernatural to speak of. The premise is that some global disaster has laid waste to the infrastructure and the rest of the population. you are a plane crash survivor in the northern wilderness struggling to survive.

vwallbridge...I bought it from the steam trailers...try this one. I've also added another in the Original post.

In any case I'm having a blast 30 hours in and I've only been to one of several areas. It is Early access so Story mode is not even finished. I'm looking forward to more.  Totally worth $10-$20.

Agree with the OP, the Long Dark is fantastic and one of my favorite games from the past year.  It's incredibly atmospheric and does a great job of making even small decisions seem like they have big consequences.
