Here are some pictures of my (messy!) project right now. Its stripped of all of the trim and moldings for refurbishing, and all of the original smoked plexy has been taken off and put in a safe place for now. So although it looks pretty beat up in these pictures, that really isn't the case. Its all there, just needs to be refinished.
It is currently running on Dreamcast with the Act Labs steering wheel and pedal combo that I got when they closed them out (this is a really nice package, it just feels so much better and higher quality than other ones I've tried, and the fact I got it for $15 is a real bonus). The screen is a simple 25" TV that I got used, although its about 8 or 9 years old and I'm not completely happy with its quality, but it will work for now. The back panel has been removed for easy access to the TV and wiring.
It was originally a Turbo cab, and when I got it, it was painted black, no original artwork. I stripped off the rubber pad around the pedals, it had been worn almost smooth (by the way, anyone know where to get a replacement for this, I haven't really looked yet, but if anyone has an idea, please let me know). The trim was painted horribly so I'll strip and repaint that as well.
I'm sure you can see the rats nest of wiring, I just wanted to get everything hooked up, tested (read: play a little), and verified all of my ideas worked before really building. The sound is impressive. From the factory, it has a 12" speaker opening behind the seat. I hacked an old 12" passive 12" subwoofer I had sitting around, and used the crossover in it as well. The receiver you see up top is Dolby Pro Logic, and I have all 5 speakers in the cab for true surround sound. Not pictured (since I haven't done it yet!) will be 4 aura bass shakers mounted behind the seat as well. Even with just the 12" sub, the thing shakes when you hit a wall, run off road, rev the engine, etc.
Best games for the Dreamcast that I've played on this so far are Daytona USA 2001 and San Francisco Rush 2049 (but that just be because of my love of arcade racers).
Long term plans after I refinish it will be to put an X-Box in it so I can run those games and also mame-x for old racers.
