Some beautiful cabinet art... Help me make something like this!!
« on: December 30, 2003, 01:37:04 pm »
http://www.dreamauthentics.com/index_ultraco2.htm

ran across this beauty by accident while surfing ebay. This is how a MAME cabinet should look!  This is the first time I've seen MAME sideart done right.  It really looks professional.  I like the control panel too.  Anybody up to copying or making a similiar cp in vector?  The outlines of the characters is a neat look, and easy to color customize.  I wouldn't know how to do all the effects though.

BTW, does that say Ultracade in the corner of the cp?

I wouldn't come here and say you think everyone has done MAME sideart wrong... you might not get any help ;).  I personally don't think that sideart is nearly as good as what has been done by some of the members here.  Look around, you'll be impressed.

Why is it that everyone has gotten so uptight lately.

First of all- I'm not trying to start a flamewar here.  So if I get a flame in response to this, I will not respond to it.

However, I don't remember reading ANYWHERE in purplemonkey's post that everyone has done MAME sideart wrong.  Did you read that?  If someone says "Wow, that's how it should be!", it doesn't mean that everyone else has done it wrong, it means he prefers or is extremely interested in something.

I think it's nice, personally I think I've seen better on the board, but again, that's just my opinion.  Hope I don't get flamed for my opinions too.

Ok, Ok, sheesh, don't get all offended, It's just an opinion, maybe even an exagerarated one.  There has been some AMAZING artwork shown on this board and it is obvious there are many talented people here. I like many of the designs displayed here.

The reason I like this one in particular is that is shows different games (granted just a handfull) and still looks pro.  That's hard to do. I think most people (warning - opinion here) agree that collages usually don't look that good.  You know- when people just paste a bunch of characters or marquees together with no central theme and think it looks great.  I also think since most people don't know what MAME is, good artwork should allow them to look at a MAME cabinet and go, "hey, this plays many different games!"  That's what this one does, and that's wht I like it.  It's clean, simple, attractive, and it conveys the message of what it is.

walls83 - I'm not looking for someone to help me with the sideart, unfortunately I can't afford anything that big.  I would love for someone to help me create a similiar control panel though.  I'm at work and don't have the dimensions on me, I can post them later.  My cab is based on the Ultimate Arcade 2 plans though so it's pretty big.  2 player, 6 buttons each, a TB and a 4way w/ 3 buttons.

ok.  a couple of other questions

1. what games do you want on your control panel
2. do you want a name on the control panel, like what is the name of    your mame machine.
3. what color is your cab or what color do you want the background for the control do you want it to be.

that will get me started till you get me the size.

1.  Ok this is a tough choice.  I play most all the classics, pacman, donkey kong, dig-dug, frogger, q-bert, galaga, joust, Dragon's layer,  I also like a few newer games, metal slug, street fighter, & marvel vs capcom are all good.   So just pick a few that you think will look good and be creative!  The only one I HAVE to have is centipede.  I don't know why, I just do.  Basically, you have creative lisence here.

2.  Ultimate Arcade is what my marquee will probably say, but it doesn't neccesarily have to be on the cp.

3.   My cabinet is all black with black joys and buttons and a red joy and buttons, and a translucent blue ball.  Actually it looks exactly like this one:  http://www.leafstation.com/images/ms2images/ms2cabpics/final/l-final-cp-1.jpg
minus the trackball plate, the two yellow buttons and the 4 blue buttons.  I kinda like the light blue and purple on the one I posted but it doesn't really matter.  -your the artist!

Thank you so much for doing this, I really appreciate it.  I'll be sure to get you those dimentions.

Tagnetti has made a cool collage that includes the games you mentioned. Here's a pic of it on my cab.

Ok, just so I don't continue to come across as a big tool (which I still don't see, I guess you guys assume Wienerdogs are uptight and easily offended) , let me explain my post.  I saw a post from a member with "12 Posts".  PMonk said "This is how a MAME cabinet should look!  This is the first time I've seen MAME sideart done right".

I have no skill and no cabinet, but I am continually impressed with the members of this forum.  PMonk asked about a cp, so I thought I was safe to give him a recommendation about sideart.  If you think that is nice, you should see what people on this site can do...  Look around and you'll be impressed.

You know I have looked all over the BYOAC site for that SideArt, which by the way I think is awesome, and I'm not able to find it anywhere.

Has it been removed? Was it ever posted at the vector library?

Any help is truly appreciated.

I think the trick to obtain some really good artwork is to search for pictures/objects) and work them in high resolutions...

I personally use Photoshop and Corel Draw and mix the work between both!  :)

BTW, hope this helps as a hint!
