New HLSL .162 worth upgrading??
« on: July 10, 2015, 11:50:28 am »
Haven't found this exact topic anywhere from searching.  I know the .162 had a bunch of HLSL work done on it.  Does anyone have personal experience with the new features and think it is worth the upgrade from .161?  I am only hesitant cause of the whole mess/mame merger and other unforeseen issues with frontends and plugins.  Also for the record have a LCD 20" on autorotate. Reading through the SVN's that would be about my only reason to upgrade for HLSL improvements so far.  Also I don't have a "set" HLSL settings that I prefer, so at this point I still am tweaking settings so I wouldn't know what's been improved.

The new HLSL is an improvement. However, IMHO, you need a beefy video processor to really take advantage of it.

I'm torn because I like the customization that HLSL offers. But, in order to get it to look as good as Lottes GLSL Shader it takes more GPU power than Lottes does (pre scale needs to be rather high). So, given that, I've switched over the GLSL. But, HLSL is still an option and offers greater customization if you need it: easier to tweak setting and changeable masking options (different mask images), etc..

Not sure if it helps. But, if you plan on sticking with HLSL, I'd do the switch to 0.162+ regardless just because it will, more than likely, continue in the upcoming builds.

Yeah I have already upgraded from intel onboard video cause with previous HLSL it wasn't working too well.  I ended up with a GeForce GT 630 2GB VRAM, and prior to .162 it was preforming well.
