This is shaping up to be build of the year right here.

I'm so inspired to do a Zelda Nintendo style cabaret but I would want to make it directly inspired and I don't want to rip it off.

Keep it up!

Finally a builder who is putting the effort and time into the artwork and presentation of the cabinet.  Incredible work! That gold foil is kicking so much ass.  :applaud:

Thanks guys. :)

Sealcouch, that would be a cool idea. I'd like to see it. I say go for it.  Besides, at the rate I'm going you'll probably have that thing finished before I do.  The big hang up for me at this point is saving the $$$ for the automotive paint....and winter is coming.  Also, I may be moving to a new city soon. So I doubt I'll finish this this year. ..but maybe. We'll see. Lol.

Got everything to apply automotive paint, including a temporary clean zone?  Automotive paint is nice and awesome, but the prep/application is what makes it worth it.

Have you checked with Maaco to see if they would take a job like this?  It's not the best paint or painters, but is a semi-pro job with better paint and application than most folks can do in their garage.

It's already prepped for automotive urethane, it's pretty much ready to go at this point.  I do have access to a booth, but I may just spray it in a make shift booth at home.  I'm not sure yet.  You're definitely right about cleanliness and prep....it's definitely key. Especially with metallic paint, it shows every flaw.  Im actually a  custom painter by trade, so I'll just end up doing it myself. :)

Went ahead and went to the auto paint store today.  It wasn't to bad because I went with lower to mid grade supplies.  It'll look good Im sure.  I got everything I needed for about $137.  Sealer, basecoat and reducer, and  then the clear and hardner.  I got a quart of clear instead of a gallon....which, I probably should have got two. I will more than likely go back and get another just to make sure. I'd like to have a nice thick layer of clear so I can sand and polish it nice.  We'll see.

Got a few ball tops in today and this is the one I am happiest with.  Black was boring to me...and the other greens looked to bland. Also, I'll have black on my DK so I'd like a little variety.   So golden yellow it is!

Agreed --- only minor little thing I'd suggest is swapping out the silver bolts holding the plexi for some gold ones.

LOL sorry, it completely slipped my mind after being mesmerized by your gold foil. Yeah FA usually caters more to the modern arcade stick crowd, like the current fighting game scene, but they do have a few items that I've used for arcade cabinets. Sometimes they have some good discount deals too around holidays.

LOL! I just got home from the shop Im using the booth at.  Good progress today....not quite finished.  I couldnt clear the cabinet because the owner needed his space for band practice. Haha.  So, Ill go back tomorrow evening and put the clear on.  Here is todays work.

Ive never sprayed metal flake before.  I got a bottle just in case I wanted to add a bit more POP to the metallic gold.  Small flakes, not to crazy.  .008 so it would flow through an HVLP gun with a 1.4 tip.

I got the cabinet all masked up and cleaned off with wax and grease remover.  It is also tacked off.  Behind the cabinet is an extra speaker panel on the ground I made to test the flake on before I decide to spray the cabinet.

Here I am getting the sealer I used.  This sealer is ready to spray out of the can, no reduction or hardner needed.  The sealer adds an extra barrier between the high build primer and usually fills any fine sand scratches I might have missed.  Sealer can be tinted, and often comes in different colors.  I just chose gray.

Here is the cabinet with two coats of sealer.

After the sealer is flashed off, I mixed the color.  The mettallic gold base coat is reduced 1:1 with medium temp reducer.  It was about 70 degrees in denver this evening, so its the best temp reducer to use.

Here is the first coat of color.  This is called a "tack coat".  Not going for full coverage....just give the color something to stick to.

Heres the second coat.  Metallic paint is tricky because it can easily show "tiger stripes" if not applied evenly.  The metallics can also "motal" which bascially means all the metallics flow together into wet blotchy groups.  Fortunately it came together nicely.  Sorry for the dark blurry pics....the booth didnt have the best lighting.

After the metallic gold was applied....it was okay....I would have liked it more "metallic".  Basically looked like your standard metallic gold auto fender.  So  I decided to test the metallic flakes I bought on the extra test panel.

Here I am mixing the flake.  I decided to mix the flake in a PPG DBC 500 inter coat clear instead of putting it in the final clear coat....its more forgiving sprayed this way.  Basically, inter coat clear is a basecoat with no color in it.

I just added flake to the inter coat clear until I reached a desired consistancy.

I sprayed it onto the test panel....and I really like the result!

So I went ahead and sprayed the cabinet...doing my best to spread the metallic flake as evenly as possible.  Again, sorry for the bad pics.  It was dark.  The color will look much more vibrant and pop after clear and out in the sun.  Ill post more pictures in a few days when I get the clear applied.  I will also need to spray all the black....but I will use semi gloss black rattle can for that.  If I spray black basecoat and then clear the whole cab...then all the black will be glossy and Im trying to avoid that.

Moved out of the way for the night.  Be back tomorrow to clear it!  Once cleared, it will be wet sanded and polished.

Thanks guys! Agreed.  I like that it will be more durable as well.  It'll basically have a finish of a car so I don't have to worry about cat scratches (see first page to get joke) lol. :)

Also, I have metallic glitter coming out of every nook and cranny in my body.  Stuff gets everywhere. Lol.
