Am I missing out on anything by having world roms vs. US roms
« on: February 17, 2015, 11:53:12 pm »
I have some US roms that don't work without the world roms such as TMNT, Street Fighter 2....now I'm getting tired of deleting the world rom from my front end so i don't have a double.  Will I notice any difference from many of these games if I just keep the parent rom which is usually the world one..other games include marvel vs. capcom, simpsons i think..i don't remember what else. TMNT world seems to be the same as the US..it's not in some other language.  Or is this not the same game I've played in the arcades?
How can I know the differences?

Is it possible that your roms are split instead of merged? Split roms rely on other similar roms for duplicate data, thus saving space. Merged roms, each merged rom contains all necessary files to run independently.

You want tmnt2a.

The tmnt2 set doesn't have a freeplay option.

You can't just universally pick certain regions. Certain games are better in certain regions.

Non-Japan versions of Final Fight are censored. Actually, many non-Japan versions of Capcom games are censored.

You want the Asia version of Vendetta to get the gay bikers and horny dogs. The other regions are censored.

The AI in a lot of fighting games sucks in the USA versions. You really just have to try things out, get experienced, and pick the best versions of games. It's not simple, unfortunately.

Although, is that really needed? There are things I can just do without.  :lol

you're missing a lot more by not using the Japanese sets which in most cases are the original games, with the proper intended game balance and all content present and uncensored.

in some cases the cutscenes etc. will be in Japanese, but in many cases they're cut completely from the non-Japan versions.

there are exceptions of course, for games not developed in Japan (Atari, Williams, Midway etc.) then using the Japanese versions makes little sense.

there's all sorts of differences between japan/usa/world versions,
commando by capcom comes to mind.
for the world version (plus the japan version), as you run up the screen of the first level, look at the palm trees and you will notice that often large parts of their graphics disappear.
the US version is ok though, it doesnt happen in that version. i assume the code was altered.
it's not a mame bug btw, it happens on the real pcb as far as i can see (eg. here's the japan pcb, watch the palm trees.. :))

I don't remember all the differences off the top of my head, but Night Slashers has a couple different rom versions (Japan, USA/World and Korean, I think). You can enable "gore" in some versions (red blood) and not in others. So, I wouldn't limit myself to just a particular set.

ugh. thanks i guess there's no guide. The only significant difference I've noticed so far is Pole Position being in Japanese .

weird! don't have that game Vendetta..i do now!
TMNT freeplay?  you mean no credits required? No thanks. I like adding credits.

Can anyone comment on differences in rom sets if any on some of the others before I finalize my game list.
I think the japan/asia roms are mostly Simpsons, Mortal Kombats, Street Fighters, and Capcom vs. games?

You want NBA JAM TE revision 1. It's the only one with the Mortal Kombat characters.

You want Undercover Cops Alpha Renewal version.

I see a ? on the teams list. Is that the MK characters? But I can't select it. How do you?
