reporoducing/scanning zaxxon side art (newbie)
« on: September 29, 2010, 02:19:38 pm »
I want to do a restore on my Zaxxon cab but no side art exists for it suprising.
I thought it was a pretty popular game.

The one side is in good shape. Just a litle photoshop cleanup and it
will turn out nice. The other is messed up..

Can someone walk me through the process of scanning artwork?
Is there a FAQ or howto somewhere?

Can anyone assist with stiching it together in the computer and
doing the touch up? My photoshop skills are lacking.

Thanks,
Mike

Best solution:
  • Get a DSLR with high pixel count and a 60-100 mm Macro lens (not a zoom with macro), as they are straight (no barrel or pincushion distortion).
  • Put a grid with wire over the sideart (30x30cm or 1x1 feet)
  • Take a photo with daylight, as straight as possible, no point sources (flash, sun etc).
  • Open the image in Photoshop and pull it straight until the wire square match your grid lines on screen.
  • Save the image in JPEG/TIF or so
  • Open the image in Freehand or Illustrator, stretch it to 1:1 scale, and start tracing! Most side-art was vector based, and will look bad when photoshopped only.

I don't have any experience with this, but depending on how you scan the side art, maybe this will be helpful:
