metal stip around front of monitor??
« on: December 09, 2003, 06:32:05 pm »
I took apart my 21" Viewsonic monitor the other day to start the drawings and planning for my cabinet.  When I took off the bezel, I found a 'C'-shapes metal strip around the inside which was connected to a wire.

Is this part of the degaussing for the monitor?  If not, what is it?  I imagine that it has a purpose.

If I take the monitor out of the case for the cabinet, can I just put the metal strip between the tube and the custom wooden bezel, or is there a "science" to its placement?

thanks

Looks like it's a radio frequency shield to keep radio frequency interferance to a minimum as per FCC regulations. This is done so that the monitor meets USA requirements so that it can legally be sold and operated in this country.

I concur... just an RF shield.  Don't bother attempting to reuse it in your cab.

Seriously?  I noticed them on my Mag monitor but just laid them out of the way... then i noticed my monitor image would bounce every now and then and i'd smell something odd...  so i taped the strips to the top and bottom of the tube and it stopped.  I concluded (along with a few on this and other message boards) that they were used as static collectors.  Of course, mine had 2 wires running from the strips to somewhere else on the monitor.

Oh well, maybe i don't need them after all.
