Best Playstation1 games for arcade controls?
« on: December 20, 2014, 06:04:33 pm »
Think of this list as a starting point if you want to add PSX/PS1 to your cab or games you can play with a fight stick at your PC.

Originally I wanted to exclude arcade ports, but I figured someone else can take the master list then eliminate arcade games on their own. Some home ports added new features, like Soul Blade adding Edge Master mode, being emulated in MAME or on another console does not disqualify entries from the list. Being a game that doesn't typically use Fight Stick/Arcade controls, like an RPG does not disqualify you from the list.

This is not a list of what you WOULD play, but more a list of what you COULD play (ie Mortal Kombat 4 is terrible, yet still listed :) )

Only game requirements:
Does NOT use Analong/DualShock

The PS1 SUCKS for arcade games. MAME made both the Saturn and PS1 almost completely irrelevant.

I think you missed the spirit of the original post. The post was about what PS1 games translated well to arcade controls, not what the best platform is for a given set of games.

The cool thing about the Playstation is that is was the last console (as far as I remember) in which the majority of games could be played with digital controls (your basic 8-way directions and non-pressure sensitive buttons- save the rarity like Ape Escape that required the dual shock).

I'll throw out some oddities like Trap Gunner, Robotron X, and Return Fire. And Fighting Force, which is a mindless polygonal beat-em-up.

And playing through Symphony of the Night (already on the list) with an arcade stick was sublime.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

I added Trap Gunner, Fighting Force, Return Fire, Gunners Heaven, and something else to the list.

I don't think I'm missing the spirit of the post. There's simply no point in playing the games I crossed out on a PS1.

Agreed. Make a cool ps1 demo stand like they have at the store if you want to do something ps1. *hint *hint :)

Yes there is, say you dont have a mame cab but do have a PS1 based arcade stick.  The spirit of the post is to add on games that work with arcade controls not to critique how good or bad the PS1 port is. I appreciate the additions, but I don't want to subtract games because you think they suck.  RPGs can be played with arcade controls. Your vision is too limited of thinking this is only for arcade machines and not arcade controls (like fight sticks)

Originally I wanted to exclude arcade ports, but I figured someone else can take the master list then eliminate arcade games on their own. Some home ports added new features, like Soul Blade adding Edge Master mode. EDIT: Also "will be better in MAME someday/when the bugs are fixed/etc" is also a pretty lame reply. And who are you to judge as to whats acceptable on an arcade machine anyway?

Sorry dude but playing any of the games I crossed out with an arcade joystick is retarded. And I didn't eliminate games because they suck (if I had done that, the list would be almost empty). Frogger 2 on the PS1? Are you joking?

You crossed off like a 1/3rd of the list because "its better in MAME" or "an RPG"  You'd prolly lose your ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- if someone made a fight stick based on an RPG huh, like a ChronoStick.

Why not include the Tekken games? Tekken on the PS1 added the ability to unlock midbosses and added CGI endings. Tekken 2 added CGI endings, Survival, Time Attack, Team Battle, and a Practice Mode. And the remixed music was pretty great. Tekken 3 added 2 new characters Gon and Dr. Boskonovitch, revamped Anna to be less of a Nina clone, added TEKKEN BALL and most importantly TEKKEN FORCE in addition to all the modes added to Tekken 2.

As for Frogger 2, it doesnt rely on analog sticks and doesnt even need all the buttons, why shouldn't it be on the list? Don't answer that, this thread seems to upset you to the core for some reason, so just go ahead and ignore it. I'll add the games you mentioned based on merit, I never heard of a couple of them and don't have the discs/images to test them (yet).

The list isn't acting as an encouragement to play the games on a fight stick/arcade cab, its acting as a list of options that are playable on a fight stick/arcade cab

@LT I'll add it and try to find that game, I spent many hours of my youth blasting asteroids from my mouse pointer shaped space craft

The PS1 Tekkens blow. The "additions" aren't worth the horrible load times, and FMV isn't a good thing.

Have a game to add to the list?

Thanks for the list, I've never played Galaga Destination Earth. That ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- is fun.

Your list is missing Asteroids.

I've got that on my cabaret cab and it's a blast. Definitely arcade cabinet friendly.

Why the ---fudgesicle--- are you even commenting in this thread if all you're going to do is show your ass?

Fine, you don't like PS1 on an arcade machine. Why waste the time taking a piss here? Just go do something else. Maybe build something?

Why are you insulting another human being over a video game list? Yeah, you're really well adjusted.

In any case, I added several games to the list that he hadn't heard of, so bug off.

The PS1 Tekkens blow. The "additions" aren't worth the horrible load times, and FMV isn't a good thing.

Tekken has amazing load times on legit hardware, emulated via ISO makes them practically non existent.
FMV (actually CGI) is better then just a game over credit scroll of the arcade.
Tekken 1 on PS1 is the only way to play as the sub bosses in Tekken 1.

Let say Tekken 1 is a downright horrible port, 8 hours to load a match, and only has 2 playable characters.....if it works with arcade controls it'd still be on the list.
Your opinion of what is good or bad has no bearing on what is physically playable on arcade controls. Its not a grey area. Its not a list of whats good, its not a list of non arcade ports.

Thanks for adding games to the list, it is appreciated. While you are entitled to your opinion of the original Playstation and usability of fightsticks/arcade controls to play psx games, this isn't the thread for it. You are more than welcome to go start a thread in the console section and dump all over the PSX to your hearts content.

There would be too much lag over the RCA connectors.
at least .0005 seconds.
would make it totally unplayable.

I love the idea of this list. When I am off work this summer (I'm a teacher) I'm definitly going to use it to set up some PS1 emulation for my cab.

I would add
  • Twisted metal
  • Twisted metal 2
  • The Second Story
  • xenogears, I think it does not require analog

 :lol
At first I was hesitant to use the Chrono art on a fight stick. Then I was like who cares, I like the art, My brother loves that game (it was a gift for him),  and it 's not like having some art limits you in any way. It's the same with this list. If some one loves FF7 and it makes them happy to have a playable version on there cab good for them, no one is going to make you play it.

NBA Jam Tournament Edition WAY better in MAME

My friends and I always loved playing with the hot spots on which was exclusive to the console ports.  For this reason, I have always preferred the Playstation version. Even without them, the PSX version looks, plays and sounds nearly identical to the arcade version so I don't see how it's much better in MAME.

Also, if your computer struggles with a MAME game like NFL Blitz, the Playstation version is a great alternative.

This.
I see Gauntlet legends has a port to the PS1.
I've only played the actual arcade game a few times since it really wasn't out there in the arcades around me.
The only one I know of is in a Game museum & a good 1.5hrs drive if I wanted to play it.
The ps1 emulator runs on basic hardware these days so I agree.
Why not run those games?

I have zero interest in dropping a few hundred dollars for a cpu/mainboard/ram just to run a 3d game in mame "accurately".
I got better things to spend my money on & I doubt i'd even notice there is a difference.

0 load times and Mortal Kombat characters make the arcade revision 1 of NBA JAM TE the definitive version. Also, the PS1 version is lower resolution (it's cropped).

*sigh* with the load times.  The load times are hidden behind the "tonight's match up" screen that's found in the arcade. I'm thinking you may have never actually played a PlayStation, now on the Sega Saturn, the "tonight's match up" screen is a solid 2 seconds longer but we aren't talking about that particular console.

That's kinda like saying the original arcade version of NBA is the best because you can play as Shaq. There are more hidden characters in the home ports than the arcade games, more "tonight's match up codes" and more extras like the aforementioned "hot spots".  Also, the MK guys are on versions 1.0 and 2.0 (I have the 2.0 ROMs installed on my board and frequently play as Scorpion)

Few if any console ports retain the resolution of their arcade counter parts, however the PS1 has a higher fps that the arcade.
arcade is  399x253 @ 27 fps ps1 is  254x224 @ 30fps.  Luckily the game is scaled pretty well to the PS1 resolution and its has little to no bearing on how playable the game is.

All that being said, I kind of agree that the arcade version is better (mostly because I have the actual boards and I'm not playing it on MAME at a scaled resolution), however, it still has absolutely nothing to do with the purpose of this thread. To put it into a better perspective, the arcade version is not a PlayStation 1 game that you can play with arcade controls so it being better or worse or different has ---fudgesicle--- all to do with anything.  If you aren't going to contribute any more to the thread then just move along.

You're completely wrong.

The load times on a real PS1 are over 10 seconds long. It SUCKS. You can speed up that screen on the arcade version to almost completely bypass any wait there (pressing buttons speeds it up). Do not tell me that I haven't played the games when I know far more about them than you ever will.

If you're honestly going to tell me that any of the lame secret characters in the console versions are anywhere near as awesome as Sub Zero, Reptile, or Raiden, I'm going to have to send you to the moon.

You're completely wrong.
Despite the obvious fact you are trolling, I will take the time to reply in kind.

I just put in NBA JAM TE into my PSOne , load screen is just a ball hair over 4 seconds (after "tonight's match up"). Sega Saturn version was a laughable 7 to 8 seconds. My discs are a bit scratched :( Loaded up the ISO in PSEmu and load time was just over 1 second (with fast read on). The tonight's matchup screen has a set time in the arcade , hitting buttons does not speed it up. It is slightly longer in version 1.0 and 2.0 than in version 4.0 ; I dont have a 3.0 ROM set. If you mean you can skip the ROM check on start up, well yeah but then your comparing apples to oranges.

I am not saying the PS1 version is superior, Im just saying its not bad at all.

In that video the tonight's match up load screen was just over 5 seconds; so either you don't know how to count or your saying the game start up load time is over 10 seconds. If that's your basis of comparison, the power on ROM check takes longer on legit hardware. Also, for that video I didn't see it expressly stated what he was using to play the game. Was he capturing from legit hardware? Was he playing an emulator with fast read/ without fast read? PS2 with fast read on or off? PS3 with fast read on or off?

The main 2 things that the arcade version has over the console ports is the audio and the hidden tank game.

Your reading comprehension is also lacking, I said " I'm thinking you may have never actually played a PlayStation" I did not say "You have never played the game" , see the difference?
Also "more hidden characters" does not equal "better hidden characters", see the difference?

Again, I have to stress one thing you seem to keep ignoring, what version is best is not what this thread is about. Its about PSX games that can be played on a cab or with a fight stick. Please stop trolling.

You're probably too obtuse to even understand what I'm about to type, and this is my last post in this ---smurfy--- thread, but here are the facts:

In that video, the "Tonight's Match Up" screen goes from 1:10 to 1:24. That's 14 seconds. You can't speed it up by pressing any buttons on the PS1.

In the arcade game, if you press buttons during the Tonight's Match Up screen, you get into the game in just under 4 seconds. It's about 10 seconds faster on the arcade.

Thank you for promising to stop shitting on my thread, I'll go ahead and report your reply for clean up (since I cant just report my own). You added 8 games in 9 replies, has to be some sort of trolling record. Its like when Archer cant get the core concept of the rigid airship Excelsior being filled with Helium instead of Hydrogen.

In addition to some of the racing games listed above, I have played all of these with digital controls:

R4 Ridge Racer Type 4
Jet Moto / 2 / 3
Gran Turismo / 2

I'm sure there's more, I just don't remember them all offhand.

Because analog thumbsticks didn't show up until years after the system's introduction, there were actually very few PSX games that absolutely require analog controls.  Ape Escape (1999) was one of limited number of games that absolutely required analog controls and they made a big deal of that in order to introduce and sell the Dual Shock controllers.

attached: The inside of my Point Blank cab (which also plays Time Crisis and Area 51, etc...) :duckhunt

Of course, I have bought more PS1 games this year than all other consoles combined so I might be biased. (Prices seem to be going back up though so the collection may not grow too much in 2015).

Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Has anyone tried Nanotec Warrior or Novastorm for PS1?  They were really good arcade shooters.
