Rom Sorters?
« on: December 10, 2003, 03:04:36 am »
I was browsing some roms on a ftp and I noticed they were put into categories such as country, hack?, etc. I was wondering if there was a tool that does this automatically for you because it would really be nice to get rid of all the lame game hacks (like all of the SMB1's) from a Mamewah game selection screen.

Thanks in advance,

Use Goodtools to rename your rom sets.  If you use it with the "dir" command it will sort the roms into directories such as "hacks", "Euro", etc...

You can download the goodtools utilities here: http://www.retrogames.com/cowering.html

If you are not comfortable with DOS programs, use the Goodwindows front end which makes using goodtools even easier: http://goodwindows.emuhq.com/

Stuzza,

I was just wondering this--So can I use Goodtools, which I have used before for renaming to match the snaps, etc. on your website, to also sort my roms into--for example, U.S., Japan, Europeon, clones, etc?  I have several console rom sets that have 4-5 versions of the same game and I want to just include in MAMEwah the main, parent roms (preferrably just the US versions).  Is all this possible with GoodTools?  Exactly how would I accomplish this?
Thanks.

Yes it is possible using Goodtools however even after you use the "dirs" command the various directories will still have some multiple copies of roms although it does reduce them greatly.

On my cabinet, I only have the main set of roms for each console.  This is normally the USA set, however sometimes I also add in the Europe set to get some games that don't appear in the USA ones.

All you need to do is run the appropriate goodtools program on your rom set again, but add the "dirs" command line switch.  This will sort them into their respective directories.  For example to do this on a Sega Master system rom set you'd use this command line:

c:\goodSMS\GoodSMS rename dirs c:\SMSroms\  - This may not be 100% right, I'm doing it from memory

And this should sort the Master system roms into the following directories:
BadDumps
BIOS
Brazil
Europe
Hacks
Japan
Korea
MVision
Overdumps
PD
SC-3000
SF-7000
SG-1000
USA
USA-Europe
World
