Wood thickness
« on: May 31, 2014, 03:48:37 pm »
Hey guys,

Just your thoughts.  I'm about to start building a cocktail cab and I was going to use 16mm particle board, but wondering if 12mm (1/2") would be good enough?  If 12mm is OK then Can you still get T-moulding for that size?

Cheers!

John

T-Molding in 12mm size is almost impossible to find in colors other than black or white.  At least that's what I've been told by others.  Not looked myself.

PERHAPS you could get it elsewhere - I just don't know where.

only because it's lighter. I know mdf is stronger but also heavier. I think for an in doors project should be ok.  Might just stick to 16mm maybe.

Since you want it to be lighter than MDF, consider using plywood.   ;D

I don't think particle board is very ideal if you are planning to use T-Molding.

I recently discovered MDO.  It's plywood in the middle with a thin layer of MDF on the outsides.  Great stuff, half the weight of MDF and it edges and finishes just like MDF.  Nice stuff.

MDO is the jam.  Occasionally the Home depot by my work has it but usually I have to order directly from the Wood Mill guys.

As others have said here, use Plywood and if you can spare an extra 10-20$ per sheet, use sanded ply.  It will make your life much easier.

Thickness wise you could probably get away with 12mm (~1/2") but make sure you have support braces inside.  1/2" is not as sturdy obviously so a couple of 1x6/2x6/2x4's on the inside for braces should be plenty enough to bear the load.

Yep.  Heldt Lumber on 7th St south of Bethany Home has it.  Not bad on pricing either.  In 1/2" and 3/4".  They've got 4x8 sheets of 1/2" and 3/4" melamine as well.

Nice, I'm close to Heldt's and have bought from them before. Thanks for the tip!
